Apologize for rant. Think I'll just step away from this for a while.
Dude! Totally justified rant. I do have an opinion on the service dept of my "local" Ram dealership...
1. Not very bright.
2. Very poor factory support and management doesn't allow them to think on their own or because... see number 1.

I did it about a month ago, followed the instructions and I didn’t have any issues at all. It took a couple minutes for my truck to recognize my memory stick, which made me think I did something wrong. Once it recognized the usb update it was easy.

Mine did the same. I left it plugged in and after 2 minutes it recognized it and worked fine. Patience is not my strong point lol

Hello Brewer,
I have provided a Uconnect link that you can use to enter your VIN and see if your vehicle is up to date for another reference: https://www.driveuconnect.com/support/software-update.html. If you still have questions regarding this inquiry, we suggest reaching out to your servicing dealer as they will have the most appropriate tools to assist you.

Anyone seeing this, I go to website, it says I am due 18.45.01 but when I go to see prior version in Software Information it is blank. I assume I won't be able to load new maps either until I get this straightened out. Can anyone help? I really don't want to spend $150 at the dealer for the update.

I tried CD, doesn't work, I tried everything, my last ditch effort is to go buy a "Kingston" USB stick although I also see this (image below). I don't think Sys Info should be blank though? Everything seems to work, I just bought the truck but I'd feel better if Sys Info actually had information about versions in it. I called the dealer, they want $150 to "look" at it, no thanks, Uconnect should really be resolving the issues and getting their ducks in a row!

Question for anybody with knowledge, going to Uconnect site I put in my VIN and it says I am due 18.45.01 which I tried to install to no avail, where else can I find the current version of the firmware installed on my radio.

I have seen others have been sent a USB stick by Uconnect, how do I jump on that bandwagon?

Hi! If you do decide to go to the dealership, we would be able to connect you with a Case Specialist who could work alongside your dealer to find a potential solution. I understand that you may be hesitant due to out of pocket costs, however, please let me know if you plan to move forward with visiting your dealer.

Hi All,
Wondering if anyone had a UConnect 8.4an without navigation enabled (have a perfectly good garmin with free map udates) go black screen and have a message about unable to find head or something like that and looking for the usb update stick?

  • We were driving last Thursday (a week ago) and it was running fine, no messages about any pending updates or anything, stopped the truck.
  • Did some stuff for about 2 hours, restarted the truck then the black screen, message about the head, researched mentioned that needed an update.
  • Checked the uconnect website with the VIN said that I needed the 18.x update, download here.
  • Downloaded, extracted to two different usbs (one generic, the other pny).
  • Got into an endless loop of looking for the usb and then wait 2-5 mins.
  • Pulled the negative battery terminal for 30 mins or so, tried again, no dice.
  • Called Uconnect, use Kingston they said, ordered Kingston - be in in two days.
  • Had already made an appt with the dealer - three days out due to holiday and weekend
  • Disconnected battery again for 2 days while awaiting the Kingston.
  • Put files on the Kingston, put the usb in, nothing.
  • Put usb in the slot while driving to dealer just for giggles since it had worked for others - it worked! Everything worked great, bluetooth, climate, radio, etc. Didn't even loose my settings!
  • Okay, at dealer, they are way to busy to get to me even though I have an appt.
  • Leave, stop for an errand, come back out, start truck - back to the black screen! Looking for usb stick, wait 2-5 mins. Doesn't even attempt to reload the software upgrade again.
  • Mind you, I build computers, am a programmer, and troubleshoot issues on computers all the time - this is not exactly rocket science to insert a usb stick in with files on it for a firmware upgrade (do this for numerous devices all the time)
  • Make appt at another dealer, they tell me that yep, there's been issue with OTA and downloaded update.
  • Go in 2 days later (mind you the battery is disconnected again), they take care of the stuff that I had set up at the other dealership also, spend an hour ($100) attempting to get the update to take.
  • No dice. Says the radio has to be replaced. While there, I ask them about the inline fuse to disconnect rather than the battery. It is now out and that way the radio endless loop doesn't run the brand new battery down but we can still drive the truck
So.... any ideas? Is the radio really bricked? Should I look into a new radio system? If so, what's the recommendation? I'm not really happy that the dealer quoted about a grand to replace this radio. And really, it goes out shortly after the warranty goes out and the truck gets paid off??!! I really like the back up camera, climate controls, Sirius XM radio (I hate regular commercial radio), clock, Bluetooth for the phone, etc. - all of which are MISSING NOW! Don't care about navigation as I mentioned before - I have a perfectly good garmin - but I think that is an excessive price. If I have to replace it, I'd like something that doesn't require a ton of mods to get it to work as it did and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. If it helps any, I have the standard 6 speaker (I think that was it is 2014) system. Not an audiophile so didn't need the 'concert' series.

Thanks,
Jazmateta

Daniel if the radio you are showing in your post is your actual radio then your problem is your radio is Not for a 2014. The 13 to 17 radios are a VP4 NA RA4 made by Harmon. The radio in your picture is a UAQ made by Panasonic that was most likely transplanted by the previous owner. The radio in your truck will not accept the firmware update because it's not correct for it. If you look in your owner's manual you should be able to see the graphics of your radio are completely different than the radio your truck came with. It's a common swap to install the 18 and 19 classic radios in thec13 to 17 trucks because they are capable of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 13 and 14 trucks have a lot of glitches when these radios are installed unless a special module is installed. Not sure if yours has it or not. Since you aren't familiar with the differences you may not have noticed them yet. Long story short. Uconnect has no idea the radio in your truck has been changed. It's showing the latest firmware version available for the VP4 NA Harmon radio your truck came with. This firmware will not work in the UAQ radio your truck now has.

Are you all sure the dealer charges for software updates? I have all my service and recalls done at the dealer and I've never paid for a software update. I think I did one myself via a USB stick shortly after getting the truck in 2014 but that was it. I also got one via the 3G net connection that is apparently always live (even though I don't pay to use the data). I know it's live since when I log on to my FCA account it knows my truck's current mileage.... big brother is watching :)
