UPDATE: Radio Upgrade?

So I’m sure this has been answered at some point, but was there or was there not an update to the 2017 Ram 1500 8.4 radio to have Apple CarPlay capabilities. I’ve seen different forums of people saying yes and some people saying no. Then on the “driveconnect website?” it said my radio has an update but idk if this is the update that makes CarPlay available or not. Can anybody help with this?

Refer to the below link on How to Install a UAQ/UAS. This thread has all the PN you need to get a radio with Apple CarPlay and android auto. The Harman brand 13-17 year radios do not support either auto or CarPlay

Genuinely curious if there is any mischief that could arise from giving out your VIN. I have an 8.4AN that I’ll be replacing at some point with a Kenwood. I am hoping to sell it here eventually.

Not really. Anyone who walks up to the truck and looks at the vin plate on the dash through the window can see it. Here in NY they don't even have to do that, the registration sticker we have to put in the corner of the window has the VIN printed on it.

Same thing here in Texas. It’s on the registration/inspection tag

The direct answer to this question is NO. A 2017 RAM 8.4 radio can not be updated to add CarPlay, and never will be.

Just to throw in a why to go with the no, the reason the older radios will never get carplay/android auto is that they require additional hardware that is not present in the older radios.

7 speed conversion harness $145 (M² Mods)

Plus from Mopar/salvage yard/Quirk Parts, etc you will need...

18 HVAC module (@ $120) see below
13-18 8.4 bezel ($80-$180)
18 UAx Radio ($700-$1300)
>> 68331631AH (UAQ w/nav) or 68331635AH (UAS)

When using a 18 UAQ or UAS radio (Android Auto/CarPlay) you will need ...
18 HVAC module (vs 13-17) (@ $120)

* 14-18 ram 1500's have a variable displacement compressor (typ. associated with the 7 speed fan)
>> 14-17's = 68268186Ax HVAC module
>> 18's = 68366552AA HVAC module ( get this one)

& Need to match the HVAC module to the 8.4 radio year.

Thats s lot lf money for the problamatic 8.4!
You can get a used alpine for under $1,000. And its plug and play. Not to mention has way better audio, gps, and has 3 sets of RCA outputs so you dont have to buy all of those expensive adaptors to add an amp.

New or used (what I have) the hotspot will activate. Nav is standard on the UAQ.

How many of you think it's worth it to put down $1200+ for a used/refurb radio vs spending same for new aftermarket with all controls maintained? That's the circumstance I am looking at.

That's too expensive for a refurbished 8.4" in my opinion. I'd check the aftermarket options if they have stock.

Have you checked the salvage yards for radios?

I will not be doing any of this, as i won't use a smart phone of any brand

BUT

If you buy anything from any party, including a auto wrecking yard
You should make sure that you get the donor Vehicles VIN # & an unlock code, if required, down here on the Mexican Border, there is as much illegal stuff going on as there is legal, both in the auto salvage yards, as well as at the many swap meets, you may call them Tag Sales, Yard Sales, Garage Sales, or Estate Sales, then there are all the online sales sites

I've been keeping my eyes open at local salvage spots for one...after market gear, with adapters and such may still run me $1000. I'll just have to be patient and wait for the radio to be found.
