Have had a dodge/ram diesel one ton for the past 25yrs (96,98,01,03, and current 2016 - can you guess when the kids were born)

Looking to get a 2500 gas burner in the $25-30k range (which will be a 4-6yr old truck with 100k miles give or take)

I know this is a Ram forum, but any opinions on the Ram gas burners vs GMC/Chevy 6.0?
Truck will mainly be used by a teen as a daily driver and sometimes pulling a gooseneck horse trailer

If its for a teen id get the cheaper one as they are most likely going to hit a deer or somthing.

The gm 6.0 is a good motor for sure. But so is the 6.4 and even the 5.7 in the HD gassers.

Agree with U&A. Going through this now with my 16 year old now. We had 3 vehicles already (my ram, wife’s armada, and a wrangler), so we didn’t worry about finding him his own vehicle right away.
Even with his “good student discount”, our insurance bill doubled!!! Talked to our agent, and shopped around. The only way we can save $$$ is to get a cheaper vehicle for him to drive.

Bought an '03 Chevy 2500HD 6.0L new and just traded it in for a '16 Ram 2500 6.4L a little over a year ago. The Chevy was a solid truck after 150,000 miles and most of the issues were due to rust. I live in the salt belt and it was a daily for most of it's life.

Both trucks had 4.10 gears and about the same size tires when I bought the Ram. The Ram does feel faster with more power, but not at much as I was expecting when looking at the numbers on paper. The '03 Chevy 6.0L was rated at 300 HP versus 410 HP on the 6.4, plus the lower 1st gear ratio in the Ram. The Chevy also got a couple MPG better mileage. Don't get me wrong as I like the Ram 2500 but the power didn't exactly blow me away....I probably had too high of expectations. Can't comment on durability as the Ram only has 36k miles on it so far and is not a daily driver.

The reason I went with the Ram is that I like the overall style/look much better than the new Chevy, and also like the solid axles and higher stance. The Chevy's are a really nice daily driver.

GM 6.0 is a fossil. Therefore, no issues with it. It doesn't break, but doesn't have state of the art power or mileage. Perfect for a teen.

I switched from GM to Ram to get the 6.4L Hemi for myself, btw. GM trucks went down the toilet in mid 2000's with their oil pumper 5.3L and hanging on to the old 6.0L.

The LS motors are great. My work truck is a 4.8 2002 and it has 336k on it. Still going on the original motor no leaks etc. Transmission went about 60k ago. For what it is and all of its ugly, its been the best truck. I can say the same way with my Ram. A great investment. I would say for a teenager the LS motor for sure. Just because kids can and will tear them up and they are cheap to fix.
