so my trans is acting up pretty sure its just the converter. It has 180k miles on it. A new unit is out of the question with price.

i am thinking about throwing a used converter in it, they seem fairly cheap. Or just swap out the whole transmission with converter from a used donor car.

thoughts?

symptoms, bouncing rpms driving down the road like the converter is locking and unlocking. Also shuttering. no banging into gear or shifting problems. shudder is worse towing my small boat.

Refresh our memories on what transmission you have, and the last time you serviced it.

Consider some anti-shudder agent before you condemn it or buy a used tranny. HERE. I had the same thing on an auto (700-4R) tranny years ago. After changing fluid. I was going to replace it too. Some anti-shudder and 10yrs later I'm still driving it (not as a DD).

Back in the day we'd dump some fine saw dust down the transmission dipstick tube, and voila, no more issues :)
(then get it ready for sale right afterward ..lol).
Haven't heard the Line the bottom of the tranny pan and sale quick line in a while, lmao.

Don't take this wrong, but I don't understand how people say they don't want to spend the money to fix it right but are willing to spend money just randomly throwing parts at it. You are just guessing the issue has anything to do with the torque converter. How much will it cost to put a new converter in? There is a lot of labor involved in just replacing the torque converter (same labor and R&Ring the trans). Then what it that doesn't fix the issue?
I would spend the time and money verifying what the actual problem is and go from there.

Adding (adjusting) anti-shudder agent used to be (and maybe still is) a dealer recommended process to reduce shudder. Chrysler use to (and maybe still does??) sell an anti-shudder. That was for the old RFE transmissions. The fact is, different fluid companies often bump up the anti-shudder amount in their High-Mileage fluids. So..it's really not taking a short-cut or snake-oil process. I've changed fluids and had (or work I've done for others) a shudder. Then changed to a different fluid and it went away. It's just one of those things. It may bring back a tranny *if* that's the problem. But it's not a miracle cure for a worn out or damaged unit, obviously.

But I agree with you in spirit. Have a look at it before condemning the tranny. Is it worth rebuilding? IDK..up to the OP I guess.

OP....drive the truck a while. I've had it where it took ~75 miles after putting in a different fluid or anti-shudder, for it to straighten out.

Then suddenly it went 'good'. Like a steroid injection fixing rotator-cuff pain!!! LOL At this point it's kind of a hail-mary pass, but hey, I've seen Aaron Rodgers complete several game-winning hail-mary's... :waytogo:

When I say throwing parts at it, I don't really consider a $10 bottle of fluid in that category. More talking about spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars on parts you don't even know are bad. I'm guessing it would probably be at least $500+ to install a new torque converter? Just doing a quick search it looks like a reman'd unit is at least $300 and would guess a shop would charge at least that much to install.

Seafoam makes a trans additive. Had issues with a ford aod. And it fixed the issue. Maybe worth a shot. Make sure it’s the trans sea foam though. Regular seafoam will burn it up.

Labor is free when you do it yourself. Not really all that labor intensive. Half a day maybe

I am 98 percent sure it’s the converter. Trans shifts perfect. It just shudders. Like the converter is glazed over.

Same price i saw 300 for a converter. Labor free I’ll change it.

What am i losing if its not that even thought I am almost certain it is?

If it ends up being the trans itself I am not going to put a new trans and fix this one without a fresh converter anyway.

I am losing a half of day of my time that’s it.
