Wait, do I really need a custom tune?

Gearing up for a cam and lifter replacement and I intend to go with the 6.4 SRT cam. I know this has been done a bunch over the last handful of years.... Is a custom tune really the only way to go at this point, or are there any off the shelf options? I feel like with the popularity of the swap, the tuning requirements must be pret cut and dried for mild applications like mine where there aren't a bunch of other mods to worry about....

Thanks!

Anything that is above stock tuning requires a custom tune. The canned tunes are designed for stock engine and stock parameters. I ran a canned tune on my truck for a bit and having a custom tune definitely is a big difference even when stock. Not every vehicle responds the same to the same mods as well.

Agreed. I've been through simple & easy modifications a few HEMI powered vehicles that the "canned" tunes could not help them reach their full potential. A custom tune is an eye opener.

Thanks guys. I guess I should refine my question. There's no Dyno ship within 100 miles of me so whatever I get will just be by phone/email conversation about my truck I think... I understand that whatever non OEM time will come from a specialty tuner, but is it really a matter of having something built specifically to my vehicle, or just "Here's the file for your combo".

Mainly trying to determine what I should be looking for when shopping around for the right tuning shop and product. One case might require waiting a lot longer for the programmer to have time... From what I've read that's an increasingly common problem.

Thanks again.

I used Hemifever. He does email tunes. You have Tapped performance, flyin Ryan and there’s a few others that do email tunes. You use a handheld tuner to log the vehicle and send the logs and they adjust your tunes based on the logs. So it’ll be a street tune instead of a dyno tune which I think is more accurate.

I also used Hemifever for the custom tune by email for my 6.4L powered Ram.

I did a dyno tune for my 300 SRT8.

I can't compare the two as they are two totally different vehicles. However, the common denominator between them was the Diablosport programmers and software.

HP Tuner is the best one to get. You can actually modify parameters yourself ;)

Flyin'Ryan does HP Tuner Custom Tunes.

mine ran ok, not great on the stock tune. Ran better on the diablo 93 octane tune. Hemifever made it perfect.

E-tunes are pretty common now on multiple platforms. Your tuner will send you a base file based on your mods, have you make some runs, then do some adjustments to the tune and send it to you again. You usually get X number of revisions included with an e-tune.

For an HPtuner, do you need an unlocked PCM like you need for a diablo tune?

How does this work? I am trying to get info on changing shift points for my truck ...
