Had 4-year-old batteries go bad in my truck a few days ago, and when I was trying to start it and get it jumped, I got "service electronic braking system" and "service antilock brake system" messages?!?

A friend, who's a Ford diesel mechanic, said the Ford trucks will throw braking system codes like those when the batteries go bad.

Also, a few months ago, I was towing our RV on a family vacation and got the SAME messages intermittently.

Wondering if that's the truck-system that goes down first when batteries are dying? Anyone else see this?

If you go that message prior to the battery going south there very well could be a code that was thrown And provide you with some more info.

FWIW, same 'Service Antilock Brake System' message intermittently on my seldom used 2017, 6.7L 2500. No codes or 'ABS' light. The message seemed to show up upon first start in the morning, then NOT show up on subsequent starts that day. Then it would show up the NEXT morning...and so on. About a month into it the six-year old batteries failed...not enough power to start the truck. The batteries were replaced last week and I've used the truck about 3 times since then without a reoccurrence of the 'Service Antilock Brake System'.
So the time being, I'm going with what your Ford mechanic said...[paraphrased] there's a link between the 'Service Antilock Brake System' message and a battery that's about to die. I'll update this thread if any new/related symptoms show up in the near future.

That's common for any newer computer controlled vehicles, those famous electrical gremlins.

Autozone or Oreilly's can read the codes for you, if you don't have a scanner. After that, you may try the ole tried and tested method of unhooking both battery terminals for about an hour and see if they go away (overnight even better). Of course look at the codes ahead of time.

Our van just recently lit up with all kinds of stability and brake codes one morning.. then we restarted and all was fine. Nest time we tried to start it.. battery was dead. I'd wait and see if the lights come back. Good chance they don't

Hey there,

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this, we certainly understand why this would be concerning. If you end up addressing this with your local dealer, please let us know via PM. We'd be more than happy to provide you with an additional layer of assistance for that process.

It’s just symptoms of the battery going bad. You need to look for slight electric oddities to pop up ,they are the warning system.
