New struts and shocks. I'm at 86K miles on my 4th gen Laramie 1500. My ride had degraded - with the severe frost heaves from this past winter, it was really noticeable. I went with Bilstein 5100's on both front and rear - no lift, just stock height.
I viewed this video for rear shocks and cut down a 21mm wrench for upper bolt & nut:
REAR I viewed this Mopar leveling kit video for the front struts, even though it's for the 5th gens:
FRONT . . . and more importantly I followed the
Mopar level kit directions (linked by that author in a reply) for the front, since there is minimal DS-to-DT difference in the front suspension. I used the torque specs from the kit directions. I spread this job over two days because I did it on jack stands.
Observations and tips: 1) My front struts were both bad - but in different ways: Left strut had lost pressure, while the right strut had lost rebound valving. (OE struts were labelled Hitachi). 2) Rear shocks were 'tired' but both still had pressure - could probably have gone a while longer, but . . . . 3) Tip on freeing up the front upper control arm ball joint - try an old-school one-piece
Pitman Arm puller. I had to grind the throat of mine down a little, but once done, it was a perfect fit and did not injure the ball joint boots. 4) Put your rear wheel well liners in the sun for an hour before you try to reinstall them, so they can warm up and get more flexible.
I appreciate the help of the participants on this board ! In that vein, I hope someone find this useful.
