What implications when installing a slightly smaller tire on my Ram truck?

What about the TPMS? I would be going from a LT tire to a P tire so the tire pressure of a P rated tire would be much lower. I've read that you can't change the internal computer on ram rebels (no idea if that is true or not)?

You have 2016 Rebel?

Easy get AlfaODB and change it yourself. On my 21 Rebel I went from 18 to 20 Rims, and different tires.
You don't security bypass so even a bit cheaper.

What am I missing… OP said he’s going from 285-70-17R to 265-70-17R that’s just the width that’s changing… right? 17 is rim size, 70 is height of sidewall… 265 is width of tire…

The "70" is an aspect ratio of the sidewall height represented in percentage, for example 70% of the width, of 285mm.
So a 285/70r17 is a 199.5mm sidewall aspect.
And a 265/70r17 is a 185.5mm sidewall.

The sidewall height is a percentage number of the width. 70% of 285mm's is taller/more then 70% of 265 mm's.
Thought you were an engineer that knew everything  :Big Laugh:
Compared to you I like my odds :)

Copy that! Thank you for taking the time to explain it!

I'm guessing you're in Saskabush,i grew up in that province and all we ever drove on were All Seasons, and we made out okay, and that was with 2 wheel drive trucks back in the 70's,lol
Yep, rural area outside Wynyard SK. 2 wheel drive in all seasons... I'd be terrified driving that out here. I've had my truck just randomly lose traction while going in a perfectly straight line down the hiway (during winter) and then around and around I go... If I do stay with factory tires, I might grab the Motomaster eliminator xtrails from Canadian tire. They have very, very good reviews and most say there good in the winter as well. There actually a Cooper tire.

I ran nokian wrg2 followed by wrg4 tires on a lexus GS 430 V8, rear wheel drive. They were an exceptional all weather tire. Great on ice and packed snow, not as good if the snow got over 6 inches but the car didn't have much clearance either. They were also a great summer tire, good and sticky for playing Ricky Road Race in the mountains.
Think they would be ok on a truck? They have 265-70-17R so the size I am looking at. I do have a 2km stretch of gravel road going from my house to the highway though and I have been told the gravel will destroy any all weather tire. I see lots of cars driving down gravel roads and they are usually using all seasons. Nokian also has a treadwear warranty so would it even matter if it wore out quick?

Yes I have a 2016 Ram Rebel... well sort of. It only has the 3.6L engine but enough power for everything I've needed. Could you link what exactly you are referring to? I put the AlfaODB in amazon and am getting a mix of results.

I grew up in the Kindersley area, actually made the 800 km round trip back there yesterday to visit my Mom.
Tough to beat Crappy Tires sales on tires or oil when they have what you want on sale.

Android is a POS operating system to make important changes to your truck's brain.

I prefer a modified version of windoze.

I don't believe in using a Bluetooth interface either, hardline USB for me.

And the USB interface is much less expensive.

Just saying

I got good mileage out of my sets but I did not drive on any gravel with that car. My pickup has All Weather Duratracs, the ones with the 3 Peak symbol, it drives on gravel all the time with no wear issues. I cannot see why the Nokians would be any more affected by gravel than an all season tires is. As you say Nokian has a tread wear warranty in any event.

I checked out what I have on in winter , they are 265/70R17 on 17x8.5 shinny rims
( can't stand blk steel anymore).
the factory's are 275/60R20, when sitting together height is real close.
Also TPMS sensor where installed @ 23.46 each, this was in 2016 so sound like things have changed the wheels where 141.17 and tires where 218.01 each, this was "family priceing" as son in law worked for the tire company at that time. Everything on truck is still factory settings.

the tires are factory studded ice/snow Nokian HK8SUV115T I don't carry any heavy loads anymore, I have been in Swift Current since I retired 12 yrs ago, before that I had some gravel roads to the farm.

I see they have all year snow tires out now, But don't know much about them, I would think could be a good idea, but life could be a bit shorter then all season (summer tires)
All tires when new work really good, after a couple years that is when poor shows up.

Most of the time ,its in the cities where you run into ice and other crappy drivers.
Only ones I see in trouble in the country is city drivers.

As long as you don’t Change the tire or wheel height, not much will change. With skinny tires, cornering will be looser. So on hard turns, you’ll feel less control (maybe a little buckling), depending on hard or soft rubber, your stopping may be effected (less rubber on the road).
But if you drive responsibly (boring) you won’t see any changes.

Scratch that, you are reducing in size slightly. So your mpg will also go down.

Unfortunately the dealership can no longer adjust the thresholds. They have been locked out by Stallantis for quite a while. Mine told me in 2021 to use Alpha as that is what they use on their personal vehicles to do it.
The reason, I think, is it could be a liability issue.

I'm that boring driver... well at least in the rain and/or winter. Might change if I get better tires.

As @Wild one posted. It's app you can purchase. you will need ODB module to plug into ODB port and connect to phone/tablet computer.

I use ODBLink MX+ which you can purchase from Amazon.ca but it's bit expensive. There are cheaper ones.

If you don't care about speed being off by a bit. Leave it alone.
Or you could get dealer do it for you.
Or get AlphaODB (or Jscan it's another app) do it yourself.

There are few videos and walk throughs around if you decide to do yourself. It's not hard, but it's not for everyone, as you could change the wrong setting if not careful.

That's not correct. If dealer told you that. They just didn't want to do it.

Dealers have never been locked out. I have many versions of CDA, including the latest. 6.15.188

There is bug , if you try saving certain values, it effects park sense. But it's not related to software Dealers use, alphaodb, jsan, etc... will all cause the issue.
