I went to start my 2020 Ram and the starters clicked… battery dead. I didn’t leave anything on that would have drained battery. I opened hood to jump start and heard whirring noise. It was coming from canister on shock mounts next to alternator. See pic. It would momentarily shut off and start up again. What is this part? Any idea why it is running?

Can you see a part number on it?

Vacuum pump, works with Power Brake Booster (Should not be running all the time if is,. Dealer Trip Needed). IMHO

Brake Booster Vacuum hose is plugged into the pump, that hose comes from the Power Brake Booster, hose is part # 04582000AC
Part is electric Vacuum Pump

Vacuum Pump - Mopar (04581991AB)

I will check for part number in morning. It’s 5.7 hemi. I couldn’t get to it right away, so I disconnected battery and threw a charger on it. I didn’t hold much faith because I was unable to jumpstart it. I came back a couple hours later, rehooked the battery and it started. However, dash briefly stated “warning power steering assist unavailable“. And the check engine light is now on. I guess it is going to have to be diagnosed by dealer. Maybe some sort of computer issue? I’m a little afraid to drive anywhere until I’m certain it will start. I’ll keep y’all updated. Meanwhile, I’m all ears. Thanks

Trip to dealer, may need BCM/ECU flash, unless maybe a shorted wire or something. Internet Guessnosis at it's best.

100% needed new battery. This was running-yes. But the computer was acting wonky because of low voltage And telling it to run. Cost me about 500 for dealer to put in battery. I argued with him that he was wrong. Nope. He was right. Go to autozone and save yourself 200 or so

Mine did the exact same thing! It’s been in the shop for over two weeks and they can’t find the issue. I even put in a new battery! That dies after three weeks and this problem popped up.
