I know that there are only 2-3 oils spec'd for the 6.4L, but what is everyone here running? I really liked the Redline 5w-30 that I was running in my 5.7L, with the high moly...seemed to keep my truck running smooth and pretty quiet, and 8-10k OCI's are nice.

Is anyone here running the Redline 5w-40 in their 6.4L?

Also, oil filters...the one I found that's spec'd for our motor is the same small one that I used on the 5.7L, the Fram Ultra 10060.

The best thing you can do is follow the book specs. the mfg made it real easy and put 0w-40 full synthetic on the oil cap. At least mine is. If anything were to happen to your engine and you had the wrong oil in it. Then they may void your warranty. The tolerances on these new motors are very specific

I wouldn't use a Fram on a used lawn mower, let alone a $40,000 pickup..

I've been running the stock Pennzoil Platinum 0w-40, but I might try the Amsoil next. They have the MS-12633 certification as well. Hopefully Mobil1 will have an approved oil soon too.

Path of least resistance is to stick with the Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 0W-40 if warranty is of concern.

I have run this for the first two oil changes but did mix it up a little with last oil change with 4 quarts of Ultra 0W-40 and 3 quarts of PYB 10-40 conventional to see if it tones down the 1qt of oil usage I had with the first two.

The Pennzoil Ultra 0W-40 has shown itself to shear down relatively quickly from a low scale 40W oil to a 30W in most oil analysis.

Currently, PUP 0W40 with Mopar SRT Synthetic filter. I will be changing to Amsoil SS AZF 0W40, which I think is a more robust formulation, and stick with the SRT filter.

I also don't buy into the "motors have tight tolerance levels" idea either, as I ran 5w-30 in my 2014 5.7L and ran 15w-40 "diesel oil" in my 2004 5.7L from 100k-212k with zero issues.

I noticed that the PUP 0w-40 is a VERY thin 40wt oil and that it'll certainly be a "normal" 30wt after a few thousand miles. And looking at the VOA for PUP 0w-40, it's pretty low in phos and zinc and has nearly no boron. Moly is respectable though, but TBN is pretty low as well for being a top tier synthetic, especially for one that starts off so thin. I'm surprised everyone has been too scared to veer off the narrow MS-12633 path. I found some Mopar 0w-40 that meets the spec, on ebay, for something like $6.25/qt. May buy a case of 12 and just throw in a qt of thicker Redline 5w-40 to make me feel better and hopefully quiet this motor down a bit. It's way too noisy for my taste for the time being.

You can run a different oil sure. But over time because of the tolerances, you can affect longevity. If you put a different viscosity oil in you motor, it could essentially change your oil pressure reading. Which will in turn change your temp reading as its reaction to dissipate heat will change. Which will change the oil temp which will change coolant temp which will change your fuel trims causing your engine to run harder than it would everyday. Over an extended period of time this could cause an issue iver time. When it comes to preventative maintenance, don't cheap out. Put what belongs in the motor

I'm not wanting to cheap out, quite the opposite. I'm willing to spend more for a true top tier oil with an esther base and more additives than PUP. The oil in the link is Mopar SRT 0w-40.

How do you guys feel about the fact/rumor that these engines were tested using 5w-30? Is it even true? If so, why change spec to 0w-40?

I worked at a dodge dealer in the late 90's in a fairly small town. At that time we had about 3 diesels come in with burned up engines that were under warranty. The cause ended up being the fram filters came apart and clogged up some oil passages. Fram ended up having to buy new engines in each case. I have not used a fram filter since!

Any paper filter can deteriorate over time if left in too long. I'm referring to new synthetic media filters...ones that people have ran for 2 years and 18k miles, cut open, and looked great. All you have to do is use it properly in the way it was intended. My dad used the orange can Fram filters for a long time, and switched to the TG ones half way through his last truck. He also used basic QS oil and changed it every 3k religiously...got 280k out of his '96 ram 1500 w/318 before selling it, and 385k out of his '03 ram 2500 w/5.7 when he traded it in, both trucks with absolutely zero work done on both engine and tranny. I've used Fram filters nearly every time since I have been driving, and again, not one single issue...certainly nothing filter related.

Is the 0W-40 Full Syn. Max Pro Mopar Oil just re-packaged Penzoil? Seems like I read that somewhere & I am seeing it cheaper on E-Bay than Penzoil.

Note sure. I just grabbed a photo to show "Blkvrx" that 4 door trucks have been around for some time now. Those old PW are just really bad ass! Love to have one some day. You can pull out a stump & half of China with it! :burnout:

My first and only oil change so far and I used amsoil signature series 0w40 w/amsoil filter. Definitely seemed to quiet the engine down.

I message Burla and he said the Mopar SRT 0w-40 is the same as PUP. I bought some 5qt jugs of that and will add in a couple quarts of Redline 10w-40 for some more moly and additives, and to increase the viscosity as bit as well. I've seen UOA's on the Redline stuff after 10k miles, and it still has a higher 100*C viscosity and higher flashpoint than ****** PUP. I'll likely make the move to full 5w-40 Redline after I use up the oil I just bought.

Just changed mine. I used the amsoil signature 0w40. With a wix filter. Did not notice any difference in engine noise or clatter. This will be the oil I run unless Mobil comes out with one that is easier to get my hands on. I got the amsoil for 8.25 a quart.
