I'm at 3,200 miles, should I go ahead and get it changed? I have three free oil changes from the dealer so I was just going to have them do it.

I changed mine early at around 1500 miles as I always do with new ones. But I didn't have free oil changes. I would bet you money that your dealer won't change it at 3200 miles if it's free, but they might, since it shouldn't matter to them when your three freebies are done ya know. I always change my new oil at 1500, then around 3500, then start stretching them out after that to 4-5000 each once I start running synthetic. Start that at least 5000 miles but usually a little later so the engine gets broken in good. Keep that metal out of that oil and filter while it's breaking in. I idle a bunch and put a ton of miles on my trucks so I like to keep fresh oil in em. If I idle more than normal I change it at 4000 miles, if not then 5000 miles.

Dealer Said 7000 miles is fine for synthetic (which is required on 6.4 anyway)

My dealer wanted me to come back at 3k for my free oil change. Is it recommended not to go full-synthetic until a certain mileage is reached?

BigA: You will get many different opinions and suggestions.

My dealer told me to perform the first oil change at 3K miles.
After that first OC--> Pay close attention to the OLM but don't go past 7K miles.

Many say our engines are already broke in when we sign all that paper work.

I myself Changed my Factory Fill at 1500 miles.
It just made me feel better. Ya just never know what is floating around in the oil that is small enough that the filter just won't catch.

I only have 2745 miles on my Ram. I will change this Fill @ 5K. Then 7-10K miles afterwards. I will pay close attention to the OLM as well.

I don't do alot of Stop and Go Driving so 7K-10K will be easy to achieve. AFE can easily go 10K but I will not push it past that.

I changed my first one at about 1200 I wanted to let the oil go through enough to collect most of the garbage also I didn't want to go too long because I always have terrible luck with removing the oil filter for the first time one a new motor because they don't put any oil around the gasket it seems to mold it self to the motor

My owners manual said to change the oil when the oil life ran out, at 10k miles, or 12 months, whichever came first. The dealer confirmed this.

I went ahead and got it changed this morning I figured it won't hurt to do it at 3200 miles. Probably do every 6-7K from hear on out or just follow the meter.

i did mine at 6000km. dealer said it's perfectly safe to just go by what the truck tells you but that he personally suggests doing the first at 5000km then every 10,000km or 6 months

My opinion:

1. You are safe going by what the owner's manual tells you to do. The manufacturer has absolutely no reason or incentive to extend the first oil change longer than it should be. In fact, if it would damage the engine, they have a major incentive to NOT extend it further than it should be.

2. I am old school. I am used to new engines having break-in recommendations and having to change the break-in oil and filter sooner than the other oil changes. So it bothers me to keep the original oil and filter until the manufacturer recommended mileage as if it was a normal oil change. I changed mine at the halfway point, 4000 miles in my case.

3. I recommend using the manufacturer suggested oil (or equivalent) for the first oil change at least. I like to make sure everything is fully broken in before switching to full synthetic (unless the mfg recommended oil is already full synthetic, then stick with the recommended oil instead of shopping around for something "better").

I just follow the EVIC meter and change when it gets down to about 30%. Seems to be about 5K miles for me. I use a decent filter like K&N or Bosch depending what's available when I'm ready and have been using Penzoil Conventional oil, which is the factory fill. 12K miles so far and the engine runs smooth and quiet so far.
