Ive been looking for a 4th gen 2500 crew cab 4x4 long bed. But it seems all I can find in the long bed models is the 5.7! I’ve found 1-2 with the 6.4, but what’s the deal? Can the 5.7 Hemi move all that weight, or is it just a pipe dream? Or should I just keep looking for the “Holy Grail” of a Long bed with 6.4? Does the 5.7 guzzle gas in the 2500? Can anyone help with this?

Nothing wrong with the 5.7 in the 2500 if your not going to tow heavy with it.

The 6.4 is purpose built truck engine. Both use a lot of fuel. You moving 7,000 plus pounds. I'd search for a 6.4 powered truck if you can. Good luck

I'd agree with @GsRAM. If you are planning on towing much of anything over 7K lbs, get the 6.4L

Agree with both above. They both love to guzzle. Also get the larger fuel tank and get the highest numeraical gear set you can I.E 4:10”s.

6.4... reason 5.7 abounds is nobody is buying it... resale will also be bad

Id like to test drive one with the 6.4 to see how much diffrence in power there is from the 5.7.

Not much, prolly wouldn’t even be noticeable. The 6.4”s power just comes on a little earlier and is more constant, more of a “Truck Motor”. The biggest difference
Would be gear selection.

The 5.7 trucks are rated at 9000 lbs GVWR while the 6.4 and CTD are rated at 10k. The CTD engine is very heavy so payload is about the same as a 5.7. The 6.4 has roughly 1000 lbs more payload than the other two engine options.

Probably no seat of the pants difference between the two. Also the 6.4 being a purpose built truck engine has stronger internal components. Do a search, I've read some good threads here and one that contained an article that listed all the upgrades the 6.4 has

I can't agree more about getting the 4.10 gears, the one thing about these 2500's that wouldn't compromise on

I also vote 6.4. Its a better built truck motor and the tq comes in earlier, exactly what a truck motor should do.

If you want to do any internet research on the 6.4 truck motor, it's referred to as the 6.4 BGE (big gas engine).

I agree with these guys.

It can be hard to find a specific truck you are looking for especially on the used market, but even new as well. Simply because there are just a lot of options available on trucks. Especially HD’s. And it depends on the region you are in, what the dealer was successfully selling at the time, etc.

I've had both and my 16 6.4l feels stronger than the 10 5.7l I sold last fall.the 5.7l was in a megacab (gear ratio unknown)and my 16 is a crew cab with the 4:10s.
