I'm looking for a set of 17" 35x12.5 or 315x70 A/T tires for my 1500 Rebel that are off road worthy, but very comfortable on road over potholes, etc.

It seems that most 17" tire options in this size are E rated but I was hoping to go with a D rated tire, as I understand they're much more comfortable on the road, and they still offer plenty of load capacity. (My stock Toyos were E, but rated to 2910#, most D rated 35s are rated for 3195#).

So the question is, have you found that D rated tires are in fact more comfortable on the road than E rated? Are there any tires you'd recommend that are still off-road worthy, but very forgiving over potholes, man hole covers, etc. while daily driving around town?

I was told when I was shopping for tires, the taller sizes will flex too much, so it's not common for them to be rated D. I do not know this for sure, but it's what was told to me.

Interesting....I hadn't thought about that. I was thinking it was more related to the desire to accommodate those who want higher load ratings...the HD crowd I guess, since those high load ratings are overkill on half ton trucks anyway. Also, there are a bunch of options for D rated 37s...

Has anyone found this to be the case, about D rated 35s being too squishy on full size half ton trucks?

I'll give you an example: When I was replacing my factory tires on my 2017 CC 4x4, I wanted to get 33s, wide, and as light as possible. The factory Goodforayears only weighed 37 lbs each. I wanted to keep my mpg up and heavy tires kill fuel mileage far worse than diameter does. I had decided on Falken Wildpeaks. They did not come in class D if you went past a 275/60/20 same size as stock. I ended up getting 305/55/20 but in a E class. The ride was much stiffer, and the weight was almost double. I'm still happy with the tires, but do miss the plush ride of the D class tires.
I guess it's like the saying goes, "you gotta pay to play".

Tire Rack has some good stats on a lot of different sizes and brands on their website. Including weights, and sizes of different brands.

I see some D rated tires are 2-ply (Duratracs), but most are 3-ply. I imagine the 3-ply are tougher, but does this make a big difference in ride comfort as well?

I currently have E rated Nitto Ridge Grapplers. They are a fantastic tire, but admittedly a bit stiff. A friend of mine runs D rated Trail Grapplers, and they're also pretty impressive, but extremely heavy, and still on the stiff side.

Not sure about whether some of the other 3-ply D rated A/T tires (e.g. **** Cepek Fun Country, Cooper Discoverer AT3 or ST Maxx, Mickey Thompson Baja ATZP3, etc.) would be compatible to a typical E rated tire in terms of stiffness, or if all Ds are more compliant than their E counterparts... (?)

I know there's a D rated DuraTrac in 315/70-17, which I believe is 2 ply, so perhaps this tire would be nice and compliant but still competent off-road...anyone have any experience with this DuraTrac to comment on on-road ride quality?

If I remember correctly General AT2 is. Not an aggressive tread at all typical AT tread I will be going that route as soon as I run across a 17" wheel I care for.
