Hey everyone, I need your help.. my 2014 ram with the 5.7 v8 is making a whining sound on startup. I've had the truck 2 years and it always made this sound but goes away after the truck warms up. I rode in another truck and noticed it didn't sound the same so I got concerned.. I have just 1000 kms left of extended warranty and took the truck to the dealership. They're saying it's normal and nothing wrong. What do you guys think?

Here's a clip of a cold start:

i wanna say either water pump, or fan clutch.

But doesnt the 2014+ truck have the electric fan?

Something doesnt sound right that is for sure.

Oh, have you removed the belt, and given the idler pulley a feel?

Just listening to that noise makes me think its something driven off the belt, because it changes as you rev the engine.

So I actually just had the water pump fail and they replaced it and said that was the whine but its unchanged

This isn't normal, probably water pump or oil pump. You could remove the serpentine belt and let it run for 20 seconds (cold) and see if there's no more noise.

So next time you might want to put recording device underneath radiator when you cold start the truck. Even though it isn't "normal", I can see why the dealership said it was in this situation. Bearing or a belt, are any belts frayed at all?

haha well, that strikes that out.

Can you confirm if your truck has the Electric cooling fan? i cannot remember where that changed in the newer models.

If you have a mechanical fan attached to the water pump pulley. The viscous fan could also be bad.

I would really start with removing the belt, and just giving some of the pulleys a spin.

Was there ever any resolution to this? I have a similar situation not quite as loud that I've noticed recently. I'm not sure if it's cold weather related or just more pronounced now.

I believe its the ac compressor... up in Canada with the cold weather I find mine does it... my fan clutch is deleted so I know its not that...and water pump seems fine although mine may be a slightly different sound

Get or make a stethoscope, check idler, tensioner pulleys and any thing else rotating up front . A dowel rod will do the job.
