Ok my 2001 ram was runs great but then after a while it quits. I can't get it running until it cools off. All my gauges go to zero and it cranks but it won't start. I hooked up a stereo but yesterday I ripped it out because I was trying to eliminate possibilities. I put a new battery in but I knew that wasn't going to be the answer. I am not sure where to go from here, maybe somebody has ideas.

Most often it is either pickup inside the distributor, crank sensor, or ignition coil on that year.

Do you have a scanner to test, it's better to test than guess.

I had it hooked up to a scanner but it was clear maybe I should by one and check it after it quits and won't start. So I bought a code scanner (70$) ran my vehicle until it stopped( about 20 minutes) hooked up the code scanner and it said error, then 0 codes. The odometer said no bus and all my gauges are still on zero.

Verify fuel pressure when acting up. Electric pumps can be intermittent.

The no bus isn't a good sign.

You need a scanner that can see the sensors live, it may not throw a code.

I was also going to say that sounds like the hall sensor in a distributor going bad.

How are your grounds in the engine compartment. If you have dirty or corroded ones they can play havoc on electronics. Make sure the one on the negative cable is clean and not corroded inside the cable. Many people forget that. You should have 3 or 4 grounds to check out.

Yeah at the advice of my brother that was the first thing. My grounds are clean and shiny. Would my hall sensor in my distributor effect my gauges, if not I would be leaning towards my ecm. Also do you need a ecm built for your vehicle or could I get one from a junkyard?

You will need one that matches you Vin. You can get them remanufactured and programed with your vin for a few hundred dollars.

I always think of a fueling problem if it's acting up when warmed up or hot. The scanner I absolutely have been blown away by and recommend to anyone regardless of the type of vehicle is BLUEDRIVER. It will give substantial info even when there's no CEL /MIL .
The only thing that I would say about this scanner that's not really even negative is that the motor must be running to use it. You can get a live reading that'll record parameters you can read back. Your phone is the screen etc. it's the best code reader bar none under $100 , (it's $99). BTW, I also have a 2008 Ram w/ a CTD and I have only ever seen the ' NO BUS ' you described when I'm actively downloading the software (tuner). As another member above suggested, ECM may be corrupted or worse. Hopefully though it may just need a 'flash' , think software reboot.

X2 on the ecm, Mine would give a no bus and not start. Sometimes I could wiggle one of the ecm plugs to get it going. I eventually replaced the ecm after changing the ecm plug with the ccd bus wires in it.
