What percent of window tint should go on darkened glass? The windows on my ride appear to be factory tinted or darkened. But would like them darkened a bit more. Also, I want a brow on the windshield. Any thoughts?

Depends.

How dark to you want them? 50-25% is decently darker.

Mine is 5% for example. Mine is dark as ****.

I went with 20% on the back passenger and back window, 5% on driver and front passenger, clear w/ 40% rejection on the front windshield, and a 5% brow with Lumar ceramic tint.

I did 5 percent all the way around with a 5 percent stripe on windshield. When my medical exemption form comes in the mail I will be doing 15 percent on the whole front windshield.

5% son! Do it or dont do it! I didnt do the full windshield just the strip. Going around dark corners is sketchy sometimes but hey Ive got the size advantage.

Where do you live? Most states have laws which state very specifically what the max tint is allowed on which sections of glass.

On my older GMC truck, I bought it out of state, drove it all over the place for 8 years never had a problem. Then one day the state trooper pulls me over to do a check with a tint meter they use. Guess what, I was a couple shades darker than allowed on the side glass. Good in the state I bought the vehicle from, but not in my state. Trooper was pretty cool about it and gave me a ticket which I wouldn't have to pay if I changed or removed in like 2 weeks. That was on the side glass. Then, low and behold I got pulled over a couple weeks later and they checked my rear window. I was just 'in spec' on that. It was probably the end of the month and they were 'looking' for whatever ...but I've got a clean driving record and they didn't make any fuss about things. Some states it's probably not heavily policed. Who knows, maybe that was the first week they issued the tint meters to the State Patrol? I was never pulled over afterwards.

If you're going through a tinting place they should know the rules.

There are almost no states that allow 5% on front windows but it all depends on the area, how you drive, and the cops. Ive been pulled over once in a Mustang, I was speeding so I had it coming. It was night and he still checked my tint which was way under legal but he was cool, I was nice and we all went our way. Tint is such a minor offense, you gotta really give that cop a reason to get a tint fix it ticket.

I've been pulled over numerous times JUST for illegal tint. I've made multiple trips to local police departments to get tickets signed off....


...just to get the tint put right back on.

I have been pulled over a few times for tinted windows as well , 1 truck had 27 percent ( on when I bought it) and he wrote me a 100$ ticket.
35% is whats legal here so thats whats on my truck I dont need pulled over just for dark windows even though they have.

Dark might sound nice ... but driving at night with it is a problem. You can't see the cars on your right and left.

I'm in Tucson now and they have low light laws for the night; it is a pain.

You want UV protection and to block the heat.

Don't go any darker then the factory tint!

35% is the max legal here in NY according to the sign up at the local dealer's service counter. I've not seen the police spot checking, but it's part of the state yearly safety inspection checklist, overly dark tint will fail your inspection.

Dont take this the wrong way but go visit a tint shop. They will show you all sorts of stuff. Some things you can learn on a forum and some not!

I Had been a California resident until recently, my truck had factory rear tint, I had the shop put the darkest tint they had over the rear,back windows and back doors. I went with the lightest on the front doors and a max darkness on the brow. In Cali I had been pulled over for it Twice. I am now in az and it’s not a issue. One thing I will say is at night I can’t see **** out my back windows unless I really try” not like I can see around those fckn monstrous rear head rest to start” I just rely on my mirrors. It helps keep my mega cab cool in the summer and helps put my kids to sleep with how dark it is lol.

Id offset and do 5 percent all the way around and 20/35 on the shield with a vinyl that way if the cops see you they wont see the tint just the vinyl because of how dark it is

Check your laws for a medical exemption also. In Florida they have a tint exemption.
