So I've had a few posts on here trying to figure out why my 04 RB 4X4 doesn't quite run right. I parked it for a while and have been driving it a little bit lately. I decided to change the oil and made the discovery that the engine in the truck doesn't take the oil filter for the same year truck. It has the larger 22mm threads on the filter adapter. This suggests it's either a late 5.7 or a 6.1. The moron I bought it off of suggested it might have a 6.1 in it, but I wouldn't believe this dude as far as I could throw him. It runs like it might be a VVT engine so I'll have to delete that or adapt a late model PCM to work in this truck. In any case, the truck doesn't run right and is popping exhaust manifold gaskets left and right. I need to identify just what motor the thing has, then determine what to do to make it work. My findings will be on this thread if anybody wants to chime in with helpful info about my situation.

If I'm not mistaken I think there's 2 options for filters. Also make sure you got the correct number filter in the box

I downloaded a good article that has casting numbers for the 5.7L and 6.1L blocks and heads along with detailed photos. If you PM me an email address I can send it to you.

With the VIN a Stealership would be able to give you the serial number of the engine that came with the truck or with the engine serial they would know which engine and what vehicle/model/year it is from if it was swapped.

Just saying!

Does it have the 45° adapter? When I bought the retrofit kit for my 03, turns out the threads on it call for the 08+ filter with the bigger thread size. Found out the hard way. Had to return the stock one and get the later one.

look at block

Im building a 6.1 for my 03 RCSB right now. if it is a 6.1 it will say 6.1L on the block down by the oil pan rail. Also unless it was painted I think most of the 6.1 were hemi orange.
