If the factory y pipe is so restrictive because it is cramming 2 2 1/2" pipes into a 3" pipe, why wouldn't I just change the muffler to a dual in, dual out and have a muffler shop make 2 pipes and eliminate the y pipe completely?

there is a point where pipe size doesnt matter any longer.. Im not saying you wouldnt get any gains out of 2 runs of pipes, but it may not be as much as the cost would dictate. Depending on the motor, (5.7 has 3" outlet...4.7 has 2 1/2" i think) the pipe size is pretty adequate for the exhausting airflow even with both banks converging into 1 pipe.
but... its not a bad idea and im not saying i have all the math worked out, just from what i have previously learned

I'm saying 1 muffler, just eliminate the y pipe and have each side go into the same muffler. I have seen some mufflers that are dual in and dual out. I'm just curious if it would be better to go that route than just changing the y pipe for better flow? I would think you would have zero restrictions if I went with 2 pipes into the muffler instead of 1.

So essentially I think you're referring to a true dual set up using a dual in dual out muffler as the crossover?

Theoretically, that would be a freer flowing system and have less restriction than the factory Y pipe. However, its been discussed time and time again on here, these trucks see very little gain from a true dual set up over the the stock pipes with a good muffler in NA form. Unless you are planning on adding boost or nitrous, its going to be considerably cheaper for you to just swap the Y and muffler and call it a day.

I had a thread asking the same question a lil over a month ago and I was told it would be over kill. I was goin to do it anyways because I hate the way the magnaflow y pipe looks patched in there. I instead decided on keeping the stock y pipe and just cleaning it up a little. Other is a thread in the DIY section on improving the stock y pipe without replacing it.
