My 2024 Ram Bighorn 4 wd, 3.21 rear end, 2,600 mi. just did an 80 mile round trip to retrieve a CJ-5. Averaged 21.4 mpg (70-75 mph highway driveing, mostly flat.) Return trip averaged 14.3 mpg towing a CJ-5. Had air conditioner on during return, average speed 65-70mph).

Just curious, did you use "tow haul" on the return trip. I have contemplated some towing ( very small boat ) with my V-6 and was hoping for better than 14 MPG.
I generally get 22.5 -25 on a trip with speed kept at 70 MPH or under. I am two wheel drive though.

Did not use “tow haul” . Would probably use tow haul if I was going through mountainous or hilly area but seacoast area of NH & MA that i traveled today is relatively flat, interstate highways with moderate traffic that was going at a steady speed. Not sure what effect AC had on return trip but i was surprised that the CJ-5 detracted roughly 7mpg despite an average speed of 5 mph slower.

Flat towing like that always kills milege, even with both driveshafts removed, you're still turning axles, and those tires on the CJ are gonna take power to rotate.

It appears you are correct, the ‘63 CJ 5 has the original style lug tires, and although CJ was in a “free wheel” mode, there must have been a lot of drag.
