That's perfect. Thanks! I want to find out when MDS is off and on, this should do that. I was not attempting to turn it off.

    AlfaOBD

I could not find MDS on/off in the list of variables I could monitor real time in AlfaOBD. Has anybody found it? 2015 2500 6.4.

    Considering a Hemi Powered 2500

I like my 6.4 2500. 80% of the miles I put on it are towing, it's right for that job. If yours will be a grocery-getter usually and never tow over 10k the 5.7 might be fine, and save you some fuel. I did have some engine trouble at 90k miles and when I pulled it out the cam and a lifter were...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

Yeah I hear you. The previous owner of my truck apparently put in a heavy duty rebuild of the 6-speed so maybe I will dodge the bullet on trans problems. If it's shifting a lot I generally put it in T/H. I don't know exactly what rebuild it is, probably a mid-priced one for towing. The case...

    New motor recommendation

I recently went down this path on my 6.4. With valve job machine work, new intake valves and valve springs, new Mopar cam and lifters, new oil pump timing chain etc, the parts and machine shop bill was about $4000. Rock Auto reputable US brands and the discount Mopar guy on this site. And...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

Yeah in my 2015 6.4 2500 tow haul mode basically means one gear lower all the time. It pretty much never goes into top (6th) gear. No wonder the fuel economy suffers. If tow haul mode changes the MDS, I can't tell. Frankly I was surprised at the graph of MDS coming on at higher speeds, I...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

Mikeru: The question is did you turn off MDS during those miles or did you let it do its thing? Me: I use tow mode some times (not always) when towing which is most of the miles I put on the truck. Does tow mode turn off MDS? Otherwise I just let it do it's thing, sometimes I notice it but it...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

Here is one data point. My 2014 6.4 at 90k miles had only one significantly worn roller and cam lobe. That one was *not* an MDS lifter. Some other lobes had 'skid marks' on them but there was not a clear correlation between them and which ones have MDS. All the rollers felt smooth rolling...

    2014 2500 6.4 what to look for

Clean one owner no rust is some good boxes to tick. Yes the 6.4 can get the hemi tick. But if it's not ticking now I'd stay up on the oil changes with the specific required oil and not worry about it.

What did you do with your 4th Gen this week?

And here is the broken intake valve spring that started the whole mess. Really the winch was kind of a treat for myself, in thanks for getting through this big job.

What did you do with your 4th Gen this week?

I installed a 12k winch on a Vice Design hidden winch mount. So far I really like it, the winch is protected behind the bumper and the weight of it isn't so far forward. While I was at it, I did a few other things :) - painted the bumper - installed LED high and low beams - Cam and lifters, oil...

    Ram 5.7Hemi Coolant Flush DIY

I took your advice and got the Mopar purple OAT stuff. I'll carry a jug in the truck on trips. And if I need more, Ram dealers are not exactly hard to find.

    Ram 5.7Hemi Coolant Flush DIY

Silly me, I read and trusted what was written on the bottle. :-( Specifically, last year when I installed the engine in my 2015 6.4 2500, I used the OAT coolant as recommended in the manual. All was well. But then I was chasing a minor leak while on a long trip and I topped off with Prestone...

How-To: 4th gen hemi cam installation

Great write up! Thanks! Two minor suggestions: - the 21 ft lb torque spec is right for the M8 bolts that hold on the oil pump etc. But it is NOT correct for the M6 bolts that hold on the timing chain tensioner and guide. Those should be less. I'm guessing 108 in*lb or 9 ft*lb but I'm not...

6.4 broke down, need diagnosis help

I'm getting ready to put it back together. Do the new head bolts get oil or no? I no longer trust the Haynes manual. The machine shop found bad guides on the exhaust side, and some of the intake valves were so worn in the seat area that they would have been too thin after cutting. So all new...

6.4 broke down, need diagnosis help

I found a pitted lifter roller and a clearly bad cam lobe. The truck was only ticking a little but I want to do it all while I'm in there, this isn't a job I want to do again. The new Mopar cam and lifters are ordered. Plus a timing set and all the little bits and pieces. Heads are off to...

    Hemi 5.7 MDS Lifter Test.

I just replaced a set of lifters in a 6.4. Most of them look fine as far as I can tell, one was clearly bad. I'll direct message you, you can have them super cheap. Find one other person who will do the same, pick the best of them, and you have a set of Mopar lifters for not much $

6.4 broke down, need diagnosis help

There is a good machine shop here, I've taken many things to them and been pleased. They have a big backlog now so they're not hungry for work at all. I think they'll be honest and only do what is really needed.

Thanks for the advice. I'll pull the lifters and take a look, at least.

6.4 broke down, need diagnosis help

At 80k miles I'm leaning towards taking the other head off too and sending both to the machine shop, as opposed to DIY it all. But I'll leave the bottom end alone.

6.4 broke down, need diagnosis help

Once you take off the front of the truck engine access is very good. Here is the root of the problem, a broken valve spring. And I'm lucky, the piston was just barely kissed. So I'll replace the valve and a set of valve springs. Would you use MOPAR 68080909AB springs or something else...

6.4 broke down, need diagnosis help

Yeah I get that. I'm trying to decide if I pull one head in the truck, or do I take the motor out of the truck and do it all. I don't yet know why that valve is bent. If the timing is off it seems like I should pull the motor and go through all the valves and whatever else.

6.4 broke down, need diagnosis help

How do I check the cam timing without removing the timing cover? Would it throw a P0016 code if the cam was out of time? I could check it by looking at cam and crank sensor signals with an oscilloscope, if somebody could advise me what it ought to look like.
