Hi there,

I am looking possibly to get a 98-02 2500 or 1 ton with supercab to use to pull my dump trailer. It is rated 14k, its a bumper pull.

A couple questions...

Is a 3/4 ton asking for trouble pulling 14k around even with the cummins?

Is the turning radius a lot different on the 1 ton duallys compared to same year 2500 srw?

any other advice on getting a truck to tug my trailer around with?

Well to be honest a dually is going to have a larger turning radius but not sure by how much. As far as the towing goes. Cummins is the best bet. Build the trans a little bit with a shift kit and the pulling shouldn't be an issue. The hookup may be different. You may want to get a class 5 frame hitch. The factory class 4 is rated to 10k. Now I have pulled more than 10k with my 5.9 V8 but wouldn't recommend it. Hope that helps a little.

a 3500 will help somewhat with towing a big trailer. But honestly, I don't know if it's worth it. You're not going to have much 'sway' with a dump trailer, they are pretty hell for stout and heavy.

I think a 2500 SRW would do ya just fine, though they'll likely be harder to find.

Remember it's not how much you can actually pull with the truck it's how much you can safely stop. The cummins will have no problem pulling it even in a 3/4 ton truck which the 2500 has a 15000 lbs towing capacity. Things like tongue weight and such will come into play. To much tongue weight will take weight of the front of the truck making it more difficult to swear and stop. The one ton will have beefier springs which will help level the truck during heavy towing. Just my 2 cents worth.

Max towing of a properly optioned 02 2500 is 14,100 lbs
I want to say they are only rated for 10k off the bumper as well
