Good evening Peeps,

I want to add an LED under tailgate light bar on my ram however, don’t want to route the wire on the exposed side of the bumper (simply tacky in my opinion) therefore, I saw on Amazon a harness made by Curt (56584) and it seems to connect between the factory harness and drop a flat 5 connector (which I would use to plug the LED tailgate lightbar for a clean hidden install. Has anyone done this before? I would the Curt harness work as I would like? Thanks in advance for your anticipated help!

The 5 pin flat is used for trailers with a reverse lockout on surge brakes. It will work fine for running a third break light strip. Use some dielectric grease on the plugs

I dont see how that will make the install any cleaner. it still needs to be plugged into the trailer harness..?

Why cant you just use taps and wire it in to the wiring going to your tail light? this way no additional parts are needed and its a clean hidden install. thats how i always did mine.

So I am trying to avoid tapping, splicing, or soldering into the vehicles factory harness so if i can unplug the factory harness and install this female/male connection in between that give me the flat connector I need in my opinion that’s better than tapping into the factory harness... maybe since the truck is new I don’t want to start hacking it up

I have uploaded a pic of the harness so you can see what I am talking about.

Works perfectly. I have another harness made by curt that provides the 4 pin flat connector instead of the 5 pin that you are showing.
BEHIND the back bumper you unplug the factory wire harness from the connector on the bumper. Then one end of the above harness gets plugged into the factory harness you just unplugged and the other end goes to the back of the plug mounted on the bumper. All of it stays BEHIND the bumper hidden and it still retains the use of the exterior mounted plug so if you needed it to hook a trailer up you still could.

We are talking about the under tailgate LED strip right? If so What kind of light are you using? Every single one I've seen has LEDs out. Just seems they don't last. My brother bought a 90 dollar one and it lasted a month. Just seems like more of a pain than it's worth.

Is that the one by opt7? If so that's the one he has and lost 6 LEDs.

X 3 on the curt harness worked great, no cutting or splicing. I have the Recon white lighting and it still works great after 2 years but my truck is always parked inside and never gets driven in the winter with 17,000 miles on it. Make sure its low enough to clear the tail gate when it opens. Mine rubs a little.

Great to hear! You don’t happen to have the part number to the one you used? I really don’t need the flat 5 even though it will still work.

Yea that's the one he has on his eco boost. His best friend has same one and the same LEDs went out too. I drive a lot for work and every one I see( don't know brands on the ones besides my brothers and his friend) the LEDs are burnt out. But glad you guys have better luck. They do look good but I'd never put it on mine cause in my experience I'd be replacing them monthly.

Curt 55384
About $25 on Amazon.
When you look it up and enter your vehicle info (year, make, model) it says it does not fit. Believe me though, it does fit!

Looks great.

Do you feel it would still stick even though my truck has Line-X in that location?

Mine is also opt7, working great for 4.5 onths now. Also use curtis wiring harness to intercept trailer plug BEHIND bumper. Works great and totally hidden

Use the clips that came with it, go to home desperate and purchase a package of 1 inch magnets. Glue/secure clips to magnet, insert led strip in clips and stick to truck. I used rectangle magnets not round but either will work
