I've got a 2012 ram 1500 hemi that I'm almost positive is rounding the cam. It's got 118,000 and I've lost alot of power (especially under a load), my gas milage has gone to crap, and it throws a cylinder 5 misfire when It gets past about 4200 rpm and behind to shake really bad as if it's continually misfiring. Based off what I've read it's my cam..

We are breaking into it tonight and if the culprit is in fact the cam, what exactly would be needed to upgrade cams? This truck is 100% stock. I've heard of some putting the bigger hemi 6.4 cam into it. I had to break into without upgrading. Will there need to be a tune programmed to adjust timing, etc?

Looky here (pdf) for causation and ways to prevent a worn cam before your install.

Breakin procedure and moly grease, and you may want to replace lifters/rollers as well.

It works for me, maybe because it is a pdf your browser is blocking it. Anyhow, check out crane cams for causation and install procedures and processes. But there is nothing there for your specific question about the 6.4, sorry that is above my pay grade.

I've got the same exact same issue happening with my '12 Hemi right now. Cyl 5 misfire, loss of power etc... I'm definitely interested to see what you end up doing. I'm looking into options right now to either correct the issue with new cam/lifters, or possibly upgrade if its within budget.

Get ahold of jay greene. He sells cams that add power in our rams.

When you do a cam swap, to a cam that adds power, do you lose any low, or midrange power in order to gain on top?

Depends on which cam you choose. The answer would be yes if you picked the cam with the peakier power curves.

Depends on how much power you are looking to add. They can custom grind you any duration and lift you want. Talk to jay greene, he knows his stuff, and can help you pick what you want.

Mild street cam: Powerband is 2500-6300
Up a notch: Powerband is 2800-6600

Stall convertor will help on the low end loss with these cams.
