Is a Catch Can the same thing as a Breather Box?

I used to work on High Performance VW's for a while and we always put a "breather box" on them to catch the blow by before it got to the intake for the dual carb'd big motors. From what I'm seeing, it seems that a catch can does the same thing. Am I correct in thinking this? There's a lot of really nice looking ones that I have in my head if so.

Certainly sounds like it from the description
Catchcans separate the blow by from the PCV before venting back into the intake

Sure sounds like it.
There are lots of eBay options, Billet Technology/Diablosport (same can, re-labled), Moroso and even Home Depot options designed for exactly this task but on compressor setups. Choose you poison!

Conceptually and functionally the same. A filter, or multiple changes of directions (seperator), a pressure or a velocity change (nozzle) or a temperature decrease (condenser) are all mechanisms that can be used to cause aerosolized oil to return to a liquid state that can then be collected to prevent reintroduction into the intake manifold. In larger gear trains (reduction gears, heavy machinery etc) an electro-static vent fog percipitator serves a similar function to keep volitized and potentially flammable lube oil mist out of the atmosphere--and the operator's lungs. :patriot:
