Just curious if anyone else is seeing higher oil temps in newer trucks?

My old 2013 5.7 with the 6 speed would usually run about 208-212 oil temp unless I was towing. Then it'd go up to 224-228, depending on outside temp.

Current 2017 5.7 w/ 8 speed truck runs 225-230 just driving normally on highway. Gets up to 235 while towing my boat.

Coolant temp is the same between the two trucks. 201-204.

Just seems odd this newer truck has higher oil temps.

OEM oil. Truck only has 550 miles on it. No idea on a oil cooler for either truck. Last truck was a 2013 Laramie 4x2, new truck is a 2017 Sport 4x2.

If there is no oil cooler on the new truck are there any aftermarket coolers I can add? I can't imagine these trucks don't come with a factory oil cooler. My new truck is rated for max tow at 10,330 lbs.

Ah..break in period.

If you've Not done yet - change the oil out. im sure there is a cooler.. Just have researched it yet.

What are your engine temps at those oil temps?

This is a very simple install if you go step by step, if my engine was running hot I would look into oils that don't break down under heat, or put in a cooler. This relocates the filter and uses that point to feed a cooler you put in front of the evap for air in front of radiator.

Your 2017 has a small oil cooler attached to where the oil filter is. It’s fed with engine coolant so it warms the oil as much as it cools it. Your oil temp will be fairly similar to coolant temp.

I went and looked and it does have that cooler. But, my oil temps are about 20 degrees higher than the coolant temp.

Might take it to the dealer first before adding a secondary cooler.

My 2017 oil temp seems to run around 215-220 when cruising on the highway. With the family and camping gear in the bed, I've seen as high as 235 when going through the hills outside of town. This truck does run hotter than my old 2010. I'm sure it's been designed to run hotter for efficiency and to get that extra .01 mile per gallon.

Forgot to mention that my oil temp seems to be around 10-15 degrees hotter than my coolant temperature.

yeah, I typo'd. Coolant will be 201-204 while the oil will be 224-228. This is unloaded just cruising on the highway. I've seen 235-240 while towing my 4000# boat. Afraid to see what kind of temps it'll have when towing my 8000#+ travel trailer.

If they designed your engine to work harder at cruising highway speeds in order to get a full o2 burn (stoichiometric), I'd be very worried when towing heavy.

What gears do you have,3.92 geared trucks usually run warmer oil temps then 3.21 geared trucks do.When I swapped my 3.21's for 3.55's my oil temps at 75mph increased by roughly 5 degrees.

It is 3.92 geared.

Your old truck should of had 3.55's if it was a 6 speed. For a 3.92 truck, you're in the ballpark for oil temps, maybe a little high, but still with-in what they call the normal range. As stated once you get a few more miles on it,and it loosens up some more, the temps will probably come down a bit. I run a relocated filter, with the filter located on the frame rail where I can run a bigger filter and the wind can get at the filter a little better. It dropped my oil temps ,back down to where it used to run with 3.21 gears. There are filter relocation kits that also include an engine oil cooler, which might be something you'd want to look into,if your temps are worrying you.

Ok that makes more sense. Honestly those temps are nothing to worry about. It’s normal see oil temps be above the coolant temp. If you’re really worried you can look into what Wildone suggested but unless you’re going heavy into racing and mods it’s really not necessary.

Gotcha. Just don't want to deal with roasted oil when towing a 8000# trailer.

I'll give it a couple thousand miles. Switch to Redline oil and RP filter. If it's still running a little hot I'll add the filter relo and cooler.

I would worry about warping the heads if it got much hotter during towing, not unheard of when it comes to Rams that tow. The heads cool faster then the block, add some cool temps to the mix, it is an issue, Redline is great, but I'd go mechanical and get that cooler is my 2 cents. Maybe not worry about it till close to warranty being out? Have the dealer install the kit?

Here's the pic I was trying to link yesterday. This was while cruising down the highway doing about 70 MPH, unloaded.

Coolant temps are fine, it's the damn oil that's higher than I'm comfortable with.

Yes, I'm in tow/haul mode. Honestly, it shouldn't make a difference unloaded. Actually, there was no difference in gear I was in at those speeds. Turning it on or off netted zero difference in RPM's.
