It is a type of detergent, normal coolants do not contain them. It will find any rust and encapsulate and deposit it into the over flow. Then it will protect that spot from rusting. I once used it in an old vehicle, man that was something else how much contamination came out of the radiator.

It also "preps" the metals. Now, I forget the engineering behind it but it does work.
I use it a few months before I am going to do a flush on any of my vehicles and it draws out all of the contaminants.
