Size is about it...but that is more dependent on the bed size than the fuel type.

Fuel (Approximate)
1500 Shortbed Models 26 gal
1500 Longbed Models 35 gal
1500 Shortbed Models 34 gal
2500 Shortbed Models 34 gal
2500 Longbed Models 35 gal
3500 Shortbed Models 34 gal
3500 Longbed Models 35 gal

The in-tank pumps might be different though.

yeah sorry i was meaning more regardless of size. like what are the technical differences? pump outlet size? vents?

I guess the way to give a better picture of what im trying to learn is, i want to get a bigger tank, but all the bigger tanks i have found always say some version of "deisel only" and I want to know why? what makes a diesel tank different?

I'm pretty sure the volume is the same, but the tanks are different because of the size of the fuel lines, fuel pump, etc. If they're different, my money is on the pump/lines be it size of them or location.

This post is a guess... i really have no clue. Just saying what would make sense to me

i know for a short bed quad cab like my truck there is a 75 gallon fuel tank or an in bed tank. iirc teh in bed is is a nono with gas since it is a combustible. (since diesel requires alot of heat and compression to ignite

Spare Tire cross-member prevents the hanging of a Cab-n-Chassis 52 gallon tank. Not sure what it would require to remove that.

The entire fuel pump assembly comes out with a snap ring.

One more thing to remember.... Diesel tanks have a separate fuel return line. Our CP3 pushes unused fuel back to the tank. So there will be an extra hole in the tank you wont use.

For diagrams of both the 08 1500 and 08 Cab and Chassis read through: http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/2008/intro.pdf

You very well might find the answers to some of your questions burred in there :)

He said never used though.

Yes there is sulfur in diesel fuel. ULSD has 15 ppm, lower than #1 or even LSD (old diesel).

okay i am currently milling through the link lilfrogger gave me, in the meantime, what would stop me from building my own tank. I can weld so..... couldnt i just build the tank out of steel as long is it gets powdercoated or something of that nature?

I don't think anything would keep you from doing that. Guys that have bagged their rams have taken out the factory gas tanks and welded in a new fuel tank.

As long as you never get popped for a DOT inspection. Certified tank welders have a sticker / card thing that shows that the work they do passes State / Federal DOT inspection. If the Highway Patrol every looks (a road side inspection is highly unlikely unless you start using the rig for commercial usage ... but if you move to a new state a lot of places require inspection prior to registration) they can take the truck off the road until they certify it as safe.
