I am new to this site and just registered, My question is I have a Dodge 1500 now 6 cyl and love it but I want a bigger truck and need more room.. I don't pull or haul much of anything so a diesel is not worth the extra cost. I am looking at buying a 2006 mega cab 2500 with a hemi I think its a 5.7. It has 133,000 miles on it, the truck looks perfect clean . The asking price it $ 17,999.00 I am concerned abouth the miles. Does anyone know of any bad problems Hemi has after so long ? Also what would be the life of this engine or what can i expect for any bad repairs? I take care of my trucks in every way and drive them very easy. I don't mind the gas cost I know its probably 13 to 15 mpg tops and I don't ever pull anything over 4,000 lbs and thats maybe 2 times a year. I will basicly use it like a car 99.99 % of the time.

Added after thought > I could pull my farm tractor if needed to and not have to wait until a friend could do it for me. This again would only be a few times a year, My tractor and trailer weights between 6,900 - 7,300 lbs. I think its to heavy for a 1500 or f150 truck? I welcome all your opinions.

Thank you all for any advise you can give me.

Instead of a 2500 2006, since you don't pull much why don't you look into the 1500s possibly a new one with lower miles and put your mind at easy? Just a suggestion

Maybe, I'm thinking he wants the Room and the big rig style, I'm guessing, but he will get more life out of the motor if he gets the 1500 , quad, but he wont have the room :( , wish there was a 1500 megacab I would have jumped on that like a song on a Teddy bear

That seems high for a 6 year old truck with that many miles. How many bells and whistles does it come with?

That seems a little steep. I just bought a 2007 2500. Its not a mega cab, but has 60k miles, and it was 17k. Its a big horn too. They make a "1500" mega cab, but in reality its just a rebadged 2500. Before anybody says its about the location, I'm in Alaska. Vehicles are expensive.

^Yep a friend of mine just got a 1500 Mega thats damn near a 2500. To the OP with the amount of rebates going on for some of the newer Ram's check out the cost of a used one with mid mileage vs a new rig with what all you want in it.

I agree with everyone else, thats way too much, pass on that one. Keep shopping and like said before, you might want to consider some of the new ones

Thanks for answering , but I added more to my post earlier, I could pull my farm tractor if I had a 2500, I dont think a 150 or 1500 truck would do very well with it. Please reply back and thank you again. 1AAR

Thanks, yea I am going to look again but the last time I checked they were way to high for me, the new trucks are really great but more money than what I need it for.

Thanks for all your help, does anyone know how much weight a 1500 could really pull and not hurt the transmission,, or like I posted earlier, If a 1500 had a manual trans and a hemi could I hurt anything or would it be to much around 7,000 lbs ? I would be pulling about some in the mountains of north carolina. Thanks again !!

To do a 1500 hemi manual you will have to do the swap yourself. I have pulled 6500 behind mine and it did ok, that being said I am used to using diesels and felt like a dog.

What year 1500? The 09 and newer models have coil springs out back. Even though they're rated for it, I wouldn't do it. That being said, the 2500 and 1500s with hemis use the same transmission. The thing that should prevent you from going 1500 to pull 7k would be gear ratio of the truck. 3.73s and numerically higher. 3.55s would be a straight dog. The lower the gears (higher the number) the better. For me, a third gen 1500 is a very viable option for you.

The 1500's also came with 3.92s in the 4x4s alot so you could look for those. Both my 04 and my wifes 05 have the 3.92s.

My 2012 Ram 1500 Express with Hemi and 3.55 gears is rated for 9,100lbs. I won't pull that much ever, but they say that I can!
