What are the best things to get started with to improve the MPG?

I'm looking to order a CAI and putting a toneau cover on the back for a start.

CAI, tuner, exhaust will improve it slightly, but at a cost that may take a few years to recoup.
As far as the toneau cover goes, Ive seen no difference in fuel economy with or without it. I bought a truck that had one and I calculated fuel economy with it on and with it off over several weeks (32 mile commute each way to work daily) and saw no noticable change.

Dont waste your money on either.
35psi tire pressure, and a good synthetic oil like Amsoil would net you the best gains. Tanaeu covers actually harm MPG.
Magnaflow mufflers are a good choice if you want to keep noise down, but there again, depending on how you drive willl get you maybe 1-2 mpg.

Don't get a TB spacer. It literally does nothing for our trucks except make a cute whistle noise. Muffler might help, but once you hear the roar of it, you wont be able to not be on the gas all the time! I think thats what kills my MPG's lol. :(

BTW, a dyno tune will help any vehicle, even stock. The problem is finding someone that knows what they are doing.

Maintain tire pressures, good tune-up, run Synthetic fluids in every hole, drive conservatively, shed weight by not carrying stuff you don't need.

The usual argument is that most mods that will give you a noticeable fuel performance increase will cost larger amounts of money, hence it will take quite a while for the mods to balance out the initial cost and start saving you money.

In my opinion i'd look at the mods not to save money but to enjoy working on your truck and getting more power and performance out of it if that's what your into, and then one day they might pay you back in better fuel economy.

Deff do not buy the TB spacer. You can do the intake, tuner, exhaust and show some gains but will cost $$$. I get better MPG now with heads, cam, injectors, full exhaust and tune then I did with just intake and muffler swap. Its all in what you want out of the truck.

Not sure about the RAM's, but my findings have been that unless you're going to tune for it, a CAI will NOT increase MPG's. Exhaust can help some, but think of the cost to buy the stuff and then do the math on how long it'll take to pay for them with the fuel savings.

I already have put a flowmaster 40 with dual out the back and have the superchips tuner.

So what I'm gathering so far is not much will really make any noticeable changes in fuel mileage.

in town? Im in the same boat... I cant make better than 11ish this time of year and i drive like I'm 104 yrs old!! don't have a tuner yet but I've got every other bolt on mod that should help with mpg's... Then again I'm not expecting more that 14 either with my year and my tires so that being said i would just like to drive it with a little more fun and get better.

Most of your MPG gains are gonna be gained from adjusting your driving style...coast a lot more, rather than using your brakes and stopping your momentum, don't "Big Daddy Don Garlits" it off a redlight...stuff like that. And don't forget, most of the gas companies are still into Winter blend fuel, which, has more butane in it and you will def lose some MPG's just cause you are forced to use it.

I guess instead of all the gimmick ways to gain MPG I'll do a good tune up on her. Get some champion Coppers, Synthetic oil, and o2 sensors.

That's about the only time I ever noticed better mpg's was after tune up and better fuel. And also wear lighter shoes!!!

I've noticed the best mileage I've gotten so far is by not letting the RPM's go above 3,000. I can usually stay around 15-16 mpg's doing this.
