Hi,

I have 2014 1500. Lately the headlights will not turn off when shutting off the engine. It does not matter if the selector is in the Auto or Off positions. Usually they do turn off after 10mins to an hour. Sometimes they randomly turn back on. I often remove to fuse so I don't drain the battery. Last night the lights turned off after about a half hour, so I did not remove the fuse. This morning the battery is dead, so I guess the lights came back on and stayed on.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Don

My dad has a 2014 cab and chassis 3500 and when it was relatively new the gauge lights would stay on, I don't think the headlights did but maybe. He took it to the dealer and i think they fixed it with a software update. I'll ask him to be sure

Hi Don,

Hi Demon-HeMi, No mods of any kind. Everything is factory stock.

When you have the auto function Headlights the BCM does the leg work for turning them on and off. The other key components are the daylight sensor (on dash near windshield), ignition switch, and headlight relays. If any or all of those are not happy it could cause your issue. I would say the daylight sensor is the least likely as soon as the key is turned off it's reading should be ignored. The BCM on the other hand still has control for security and perimeter lighting, which are handled with both software and hardware. Also if there is some erroneous voltages in the fuse block threat could be tripping the headlight relays... mods to your electrical system such as aftermarket lighting or incorrectly installed AV equipment can cause this.

Normally the headlights do stay on for a very short period of time when truck is turned off. I have never looked in the menu functions to see if it can change the amount of time they stay on after ignition is turned off. The strange thing is that you say they sometimes come back on by themselves.

Hi MdMassey,

Thanks for your reply. I think you're right about the BCM. Removing two of the Body Controller fuses turned off the headlights. Is the BCM something that is easily replaced?

It is up under the dash left of the steering column, difficult to reach. You have to have the BCM flashed to your VIN number.

I wouldn't be so quick to through parts at the problem until you discover the root cause. You need to pull DTCs from the BCM, if there is a sensor, switch, or FETs not operating properly, there should be a DTC set.

Because the headlights are turning on when the vehicle is parked, the cause could easily be another module acting up on the CAN bus. The details of how and when the headlamps are allowed to operate needs to be understood and I've never seen a discussion on that. You may have to pony-up at your dealer's service department for diagnostics.

Do you have the exit timer set? Mines on the radio, and set to 90 sec after exit of truck. Check and see if you can set yours to 0 and they should turn off immediately.

Hi KCaudill,

Yes, I've tried setting setting it to zero. The lights still stay on. Now I just disconnect the negative battery terminal when I get out of the truck. I think I'll make an appointment with the local Dodge Dealer.

Fixed now

Hi Folks,

I finally took my 2014 1500 into the dealer. Turned out to be the light switch itself. $70 for the switch, and $180 for labor. But at least the headlights turned off after turning off the truck when I got home tonight.

I want to thank all those who responded with helpful suggestions.

Same problem, lights (so far) have kicked off after about 9-10minutes. Will try having a look at the light switch.

Looks my part number is
MOPAR 68189154AA {#68146507AA}
W/ Automatic Headlamps, Cargo and CHMSL Lamp, and Fog Lamps (Only 3 Remaining)

according to RockAuto

edit: another online place is saying that the part number is now:
68269912AA

edit 2: searched youtube and got a vid of how easy the @#@# switch comes out (friction grip). easy replace for the DIY guy.
