Transfer case or transmision

I just picked up a 1998 1500 4x4,regular cab short box,it's got the 360, with manual trans,the issue it has is it randomly will just stop pulling itself,then sometimes it will only have 2hi,sometimes only 4hi,sometimes only 4lo,sometimes nothing works at all,no forward or reverse,no matter where you shift the transfer case,yesterday I drove it into my yard in 2hi,worked great shut it off,went out an hour later had nothing,wouldn't move at all,works very randomly and intermittently,where to start? Trans,clutch,transfer case? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like an issue in the T case. Any hard shifting or clutch acting up?
