I'm still learning about the CAD system used to "lock in" the front axle on my Ram. I'm concerned that there should be some special precautions used with this system, especially on a truck like mine that has some age and 226,000 miles on it. Advice is appreciated.

Is yours the manual 4x4 where you have the stick in the floor? Mine has the proper 4 wheel drive operating and shifting procedures in the owners manual and also on the back side of the drivers side visor

Yes, it is. I'm aware of how to shift it into and out of four-wheel drive, I just have concerns about the reliability of the segmented front axle system.

The system overall is pretty solid. I wouldn't go doing any heavy duty pulling like tug a truck with the standard system. But the splines and axel parts are huge. The collar itself is pretty strong and I haven't heard many people complain about it breaking. The weakest point that I have found is the actuator of the system. It can get bound up easy and not lock in place as well as some of the hub locking systems. For normal 4 wheel in snow and light to moderate mud it is quite reliable as long as you keep the lines in good shape. Mine has steel lines to provide vac and they have some holes that allow vac to leak. But if you want a sure fire locking system there is a cable system that you can run. Hope this helps

I agree with the above. Having taken it mostly apart the parts are strong. I read it is stronger than other systems because of this design. There is a cable system you can convert to as well as a type similar to locking hubs. I can find the write up on the cable mod.

I haven't done a cable conversion yet. The kits are found online and usually have instructions. Only know of a few people that use the cable kit.

Cable kit really cool because you can get 2WD Lo range then... Great for working with trailers...
