Actually thats a myth...

The exhaust brake is nothing more than a butterfly valve with a preset hole in the middle. Drive pressure will not exceed 60 PSI which the valve springs are rated for. So no harm comes to the engine.

Like my buddy CajFlynn from over on my site rolled over 1 MILLION MILES on his truck and has a exhaust brake as well. But finally wore it plumb out..

As for harm I'm closing in at 200K miles on the clock and still uplling 21-22 MPG... So if there was any damage or harm from the exhaust brake I would surely see a loss in MPG and performance. Nope... Same thing as a throttle plate on a gasser. Just diesel have it in the exhaust and not the intake.

From Jacobs Web Site...
Jacobs Vehicle Systems | Exhaust Brakes

How It Works
The increased backpressure in the engine creates resistance against the pistons, slowing the crankshafts rotation and helping to control the vehicle speed. Overall, this requires less use on the service brakes, which means they last longer and reduce overall costs.

Jacobs... Bought mine in the first year of ownership of the truck, cost me about $750 bucks and was added to the warranty. :naughty:

I think if I could do it again I would look at PAC Brake much better design and better holding power. Its got a modified valve with a spring load so it close up tighter at lower R's to give better hold back power.
