Seems like I have been cleaning every inch of this truck to make it perfect and pristine. I spent about 2 hours cleaning my engine bay.

I took down the "hood carpet" and moldings and other trim. Cleaned them all.

What is the purpose of the carpet on the hood? Right now I have it off, steam cleaned and drying. It looks like new and I need to go to autozone to buy new fasteners. Could I leave it off?

It was super dirty, took a long time to get sparkly like this:

Steam cleaned padding, made it look like new!

Tomorrow is another mod, and I plan on wiping the whole engine bay down with armor all to make it look nice.

The pad on the hood is insulation, yes you can leave it off, it does help reduce noise too.

DONT USE ARMOR ALL!!! haha that is if you want to keep the shiny look. The oils in armor all will attract dust and dirt and make it dirty in about 2 miles of driving.

The "carpet" is not necessary, but as stated it provides some noise dampening

On my 2004 I took that long strip at the top of the firewall off since the plastic looked better anyway and my truck never had the large pad that attached to the hood so I did this: (note, the brown residue was from a failed attemp at using one of those dynamat type hoodliners)

I only had it done for about three weeks and then I traded in the truck but it was still holding up very well at that time.

Thats pretty much how mine looked, slightly less. But just like that! Your brown residue was the grease and dirt combined for the past 5 years on mine.

My truck 6 years old this year, she looks nice now.

My 2 cents on engine bay cleaning is watch where you spray the high pressur water. Other than that, I basically just wipe everything I can with a rag smeared with a little wd -40. Pretty old school.

So is there a good cleaner that doesn't collect dust?

I found these tips on engine cleaning to be very helpful. Soon as I can get some time to catch up on a few projects, I definitely want to give mine a good cleaning.

I just use simple green and soft brush and garden hose. Just not alot of pressure on the hose. Done that forever and never had any problems

X2, I just get it nice and warm in there and spray it down and let it sit for a few minutes then rinse. I go back over some areas with a rag that has the simple green on it to hit the tight spots then give it a final rinse. Always looks NEW, never shiny and lubed up, just clean. I would never put anything like Armor All on the plastic and stuff cuz it definitely attracts dirt and dust like stated above.
