Hey forum members

So long story short is I do not have the key for my wheel locks. Took it to the dealer to get tires rotated hoping they had one that fit. They don't. They said in all my paperwork from the purchase of the truck will be a company and part number for the wheel locks. I looked through all my paperwork and I do not have anything on wheel locks. The service guy said it would a company called McGovern or something like that. I do not see a company online for wheel locks with that name?
Anybody know the correct name? Looking to get a replacement key.
Any help is appreciated.

Look through your paperwork received when you bought your truck. There should be a small thick paper stock card from Mcgard with the wheel lock information on it. The numbers on that can be used to obtain a new one.

If you cant find it in all the paperwork have you checked the glove box??

the "paperwork" is actually part of the bag that the wheel locks come in. When I took delivery of my truck the dealer gave me that bag which contained the lug nuts they had removed....sounds like you may never have received that bag?

In vehicles I have purchased new with wheel locks the dealer never gave me lug nuts, only the card that has the locking nut information.

I lost my key before on the Magnum. I believe the locks are made by McGard. All I had to do was take a picture of the lock and email it to them. $14 and week later, I had a new key.

I don't have any paperwork from McGard nor do I have any paperwork that mentions wheel locks. Dealer never gave me the key tool for the locks. PITA now. The dealer I bought it from (back in February) is 2hrs one way from me so that is a PITA.

But I was thinking about taking a picture and going from there. So that's good that somebody else has done that.

Thank you everyone.

Years ago I lost a wheel lock. This is what I did to get the locks off. I took a harden socket that was a little bigger than the lock and hammered it on with a 5 pound hammer until it could not go any further. I used a 3/4 in
Craftsman socket and a 2.5 extension. They did come off which I was very happy about. You may want to try that it may work. Good luck.....

mcguard and it should be in the sealed plastic of your like me and don't bother with manuals or inside the pouch or they may have stuffed it in the manual if they opened it. I sold my 20's with lugs and locks and forgot to give the guy the paper hope he doesn't lose it. They can be removed at a good shop I have seen plain lugs welded on a lock a few years ago. Came right off.

Honestly aside from the sport and black express wheels I don't know why they even put locks on. I had them get me 4 spare lugs for my chrome clads on my other truck who wants to steal them with the good years. I have spindle lugs on all my vehicles easy to get a spare at most shops and I haven't met anyone dumb enough to try and steal from me. I park my truck or trans am in front of my garage at my apt and if I hear someone out there I have a clear shot from my bedroom on the second floor. 13 reasons not to try and a spare mag just incase they have a lot of friend is a .45 incase the 9mm isn't enough.

The McGard locks won't come off with a hammered on socket. There's a collar around the outside that will just spin. Pretty smart design, but that's also why they're so big and ugly.

you'd be surprised what people will steal. my friend had some older beater with rusted plain steel rims and bald tires. he went to Niagara Falls and left the hotel the next morning to see his car sitting there without wheels. they also stole his battery and a bunch of other small things

at fire$tone we used a dremmel and cut that collar ring off (w/o scratching the wheel) and hammered a 19 or a 22mm socket on em and impacted them off. we used cheap kobalt sockets on fire$tone$ account

I hope you get this figured out. If it was me I would not have those locks they are a pain and good thieves will have the key or work around anyway.

Called McGard today. Told them my situation and that I went to a dealer to get tires rotated hoping they would have the correct tool. She asked my zip and then which dealer. She said that that dealer has a "master" key tool. Once that is used they can tell me the correct key tool I need and I can call McGard back and order the correct one so I have it.
So it looks like I will be calling them and telling them what McGard told me and see what happens.

I didn't think of that the Volvo dealer I do paint work for has a box with all the lock designs and once you find the right one it's just ordering it. Wow a battery and rusty wheels must have been crack or **** addicts.

U can just go get a kobalt steel drill bit the size of the wheel stud and drill it right out. U just have to replace the stud but this is the easiest way to get it off without keys. I've done this on a couple occasions when the tire mech tighten lugs to tight and the stud spins and I bought a car without the key before and if it's just a stripped stud u can put the sized socket over it and drill thru. MAy have to take a lil outta the socket but it will be fine trust me
