Hi -I'm new here and shopping the many 2021 Classic Warlocks coming off 3yr leases-
A few days ago, test drove a 2021 Classic Warlock V6 4X4: 33,000 miles, 3.55 differential.
Carfax and inspection indicated truck has been well-maintained.
After 15" on the road, shifted into reverse and heard a distinct consistent whine while backing from what sounded like the differential.
I was backing at a normal speed.
Didn't sound horrible, but very noticeable. Unusual to me -but maybe that's just how the gears sound in reverse(?)
Mentioned to salesman -they didn't say much.

Today, did same test drive on another 2021 Classic Warlock, 31,000 miles, 3.55 differential with the Anti-Spin option.
When backing this truck, there was a faint and intermittent whine -there but not nearly as noticeable.

Q:
Is the differential whine common in reverse for the 3.55 differential?
ie: Should there be NO whine, therefore a big concern? Should I walk away or insist it be addressed by the dealer before buying?
I plan to discuss it with the dealer's service mgr -but hope to gain additional perspective here first.
Thanks for your time.

Thanks for your welcoming replies to the forum LOL!
As noted, the Ram salesman didn't have a response to my comment about the whine in reverse-
And unfortunately he didn't offer a Challenger test drive, which I'd have gladly accepted LOL.

I've asked this Q elsewhere -got one response that it was a red flag and another said maybe I should steer clear.
Therefore I do appreciate your additional perspective.
Apparently, reading between the lines in your posts, the whine in reverse is known/expected. (See, I got that LOL!)
Therefore good to know there's no concern if I buy the truck.

Thanks For Your Support!

Welcome to the Forums

You can check the differential fluid and if it’s whitish or milky brown it’s probably has water contamination.
If you find any particals like sawdust then you probably don’t want the truck.
If fluid is smelly and slick to the touch you probably have a candidate but if you’re really conservative then you’ll pay a specialist to examine the gears and seals.

Mister Luck, thanks for your reply-
Assuming previous responses are correct, the whine is normal in reverse(?)
I plan to discuss the perspective I've gained here w/the Service Mgr before a price to buy this truck is agreed on-
Will ask if the fluid was checked when they went through the truck before sale.

Welcome to the forum.
You can always test drive a new similarly equipped truck with the 3.55 to see if they make the same whine..
indept, thanks for your reply-

Don't know if the Anti-Spin on the 2nd truck is a factor.
Lot's of 2021's on the lots now, but 3.55 is rare.

My 2020 warlock with 3.55 does the same thing in reverse. Two buddies have the same truck and they both do it too.
kyguylal, thanks for your reply-
same whine on three more 3.55's seems to seal the deal -don't think any need to discuss w/the dealer now.

For sure. Best of luck. I've had my truck for a week and it's been great. Love the look of the classic warlocks.
Did you buy from a dealer?
Not many 2020's here, but dozens of 2021's coming off 3yr lease on the lots and more every day.
Don't seem to be moving -most priced $29-30K for V6 and I get regular emails with price drops for ones I'm tracking.
Based on above, hope for a good deal off ask prices.
2021 Classic Warlocks appear to be a good value at ask price vs other brands.

Yep they are a "Classic Look"...doing a 2 tone wrap on my guy next week..kinda retro..will post in the "exterior "forum when done..
Will watch for your post, what color is yours?
One I'm looking at is white, other is black.
Just the way it worked out -have always avoided both colors.
The white truck's "black nose" is something I'd try to get used to, and if not then look into how to improve that!

Blacks not a colour its a flipping carreer, lol. White is generally acknowledged as having the best resale value,it's also easier to keep clean, and doesn't show minor imperfections as much.
My old 13 was white with the black front end,i had it colour matched to the rest of the truck.

Very Nice.:)
Assume that the cost for that paint job now is a lot more than what you paid in 2013!
Don't know much about wraps -whether would work and approx cost.

Good ol dodges. Where knocks, ticks, and whines are considered normal.
LOL -can make all the noises it wants, if they are normal!
Looking at the Classic Warlock V6's b/c it's a long-proven setup without a lot of the new techy stuff.

I negotiated it into the price of the truck,as the truck being a 2 wheel drive RCSB had been sitting on the dealers lot for about 7 months when i bought it. You can't give a 2 wheel drive regular cab shortbox truck away in western Canada,so they were more then willing to paint it,to make the sale, lol
