I just upgraded my 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn from RA4 with Navigation to a new UAS with CarPlay/AA. I found a YouTube video of someone doing the install and then made my way to this forum. I spent a few days reading the hundreds of posts and making notes on how to do the upgrade, and I would like to thank everyone here for all their knowledge and support. I'd particularly like to thank
@Mpgrimm2 for his help sourcing my UAS, hub, and harness. He answered the many questions I still had remaining and even helped me get what I needed to upgrade my RA4 from v16.09.09 to v18.45.01.
I'll list my upgrade parts, experience, and notes from the install:
2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn 4x4 Crew Cab 5.7L with: 8.4 Uconnect with Navigation (PN 68258671AH software version 16.09.09), full center console, Alpine sound system, satellite radio, factory HVAC 7-speed fan, Dual zone climate control, factory backup camera (tailgate), heated seats & steering wheel, steering wheel controls with hands-free calling, voice, and radio function.
UAS: PN 68331635AO (April 2023)
Hub: 2017/18 Premium 8pin Chrysler 200 Dual USB Hub (PN 68283703AA)
Adapter harness from
@Mpgrimm2
I wanted everything to be plug-and-play and not lose any functionality, so
@Mpgrimm2 sourced me the perfect parts and shipped them all quickly. The HU swap was very simple. The backup camera, heated seats, and steering wheel functions didn't function at first, but as others have mentioned, I just had to let the BCM do its thing overnight.
My check engine light came on after everything was installed and went away within a day, someone mentioned this is due to reconnecting the battery to test the newly installed unit while some of the plugs from the dash while still disconnected that throws an error, but quickly resets after a few cycles.
The media hub install went smoothly; I have a full center console, so accessing the media hub harness was simple, with the removal of only 7 T20 Torx screws. There was very little trimming needed to fit the Chrysler 200 media hub, I used an exacto knife - the plastic is pretty soft. As a note, I trimmed only the bottom of the opening because I wanted to retain the top "slot" that was there, but I would suggest trimming the top or both. By trimming only the bottom of the opening, the new hub fit fine and clipped in, but it made it sit too low on the console supports underneath, causing my console tray not to be reinstalled properly and my latch not to close smoothly. I spent most of my time on this install trimming the supporting plastic braces beneath the new media hub so the console tray would fit flush again and close and latch easily.
I hope any of this may be helpful to the next person wanting to make this upgrade, I think it's well worth it! Thanks again to everyone who took the time to experiment and post this thread.
