    2016 Cumins Turbo/Actuator failure

$6K? We sell just the actuator at work for $1,700. I replaced my factory turbo with a more powerful and reliable fix geometry S365 and performance manifold for $1,600. Did the install myself and was fairly easy other than lifting the old turbo and manifold out of the engine bay while...

Need advice on picking a truck

My statement from long ago was based on the average 1,443 users who logged tens of millions of miles of fill-up on Fuelly.com. Around 22 mpg still seems to be the average. Since writing this post from 2018, I actually purchased a 3.0L Ecodiesel Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. On the back country...

Normal coolant, oil, and trans temps.

I purchased a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Ecodiesel late last year and have been surprised on how much higher it's temps are compared to my Cummins. Trans is 195-200F, oil is 215-230F, and coolant is 205-225F when I am goin 70-75 mph down the highway, unloaded. It has 35x12.5 Nitto Ridge Grapplers...

    Fuel Mileage

if you put larger than stock tires on, make sure your speedo is calibrated to your tire size. If it is not, then both the computer and hand calculations will be wrong. According to Fuelly with hundreds of 6.4L owners logging millions of miles, your end of tank calculation should be around 12...

Start out hesitation on 2018 6.7L 3500 when cold

Hesitation as in it waits for the grid heater to warm up before starting or hesitation as it makes a loping sound(like it has a mild cam in it) until it warms up? In regards to the lope or surging idle, I have two tunes for my truck from two different tunes, Hardway Performance and Anarchy...

    tie rod ends?

The front suspension of the HD's changed from a 5-link setup to a much stronger 3-link system in 2014.

    Transmission Question

 225 psi on a stock valve body! Holy Hell! I am surprised that the separator plate and gasket in the valve body lasted longer than a few thousand miles with 225 psi.

    Transmission Question

I would have your brother get with his tuner to send him a 225 psi line pressure tune. He might have to pay a hundred dollars or so for a tune change, but all those expensive parts would be worthless without increased line pressure to hold those performance clutches together.

    Transmission Question

Line pressure constantly changes from 90 psi to to the max numbers below depending on how much throttle you give it and current gear. In stock form, max line pressure should go up to 160 psi. If it is tuned without an aftermarket valve body then max will likely be 170 psi. If he is has an...

    ? Tire mileage

Had Nitto Trail Grapplers that only lasted around 30k miles. Replaced them with Nitto Ridge Grapplers and got 60k miles out of them while never rotating them. Very quiet on the road for how aggressive they are. Have about 20k miles on my second set of Ridge Grapplers.

    3:73 to 4:10 cost

Correct as far as peak HP and RPM, although I forgot the HO has torque of 1,800. That changes the amount of HP generated at peak torque. I was just doing the math on the HP these two generate at peak torque. (Torque X RPM) / 5,252 = HP at said RPM (850 lb-ft X 1,700 rpm) / 5,252 = 275 hp at...

    3:73 to 4:10 cost

From the engine dyno released by Dodge back in the day, the 8.0L V10 does put down more torque and therefore more horsepower of around 250 hp at 1,700 rpm than the 6.4L. Max torque of the 8.0L was 450 lb-ft at 2,400 rpm which is really low for a N/A gas engine. Torque generates horsepower and...

    3:73 to 4:10 cost

The unfortunate thing is that while shorter rear gears will give you more torque to the wheels, it will not give you more horsepower which is what dictates how fast you can go. The 6.4L does have a lot of horsepower, but like most N/A engines you don't a lot of it at rpms down low where you...

    3:73 to 4:10 cost

True, but I don't think many get a diesel just to save money just like many Challenger R/T owners didn't get the V8 over the V6 to save money or the F150 Ecoboost owner didn't get the turbo 6 over the base V6. Those engine options will cost the owner more and more over time since they use more...

$4k dollars? You might as well get the diesel if you had to do that. I don't think you will get even 25% of that $4k back on resale, however, you are more likely get up to 90% of the $8k you spend on the diesel back on resale.

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

To be fair about the power levels of the 4.9L, all engines back then didn't make much power. My 1990's F150 inline 6 made 150 hp and my cousins 5.0L made 185 hp. Only 35 more hp yet it had more issues than mine. The 7.3L diesel made 180 hp in those years and the big 7.5L HD gas engine made 230...

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

Some of the best and most reliable gasoline truck engines were straight 6 engines. One of the best was the Ford 300(4.9L). It didn't make much horsepower or rev that high, but it had plenty enough low end torque to pull a barn down. Out pulled my cousins 5.0L V8 he had in his F150 all the...

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

My current Ram was on a flatbed wrecker at 7k miles. Using the same standard, does that mean all Ram 2500's are POS's? I don't think so, especially when there are plenty out there who haven't had issues. Judging a whole engine line based on one instance is a bit idiotic. Heck, even in the...

    3:73 to 4:10 cost

It is impressive that 15.4 is your average. Most 6.4L owners on Fuelly get way less. Although as I stated earlier, if you get above average with the 6.4L due to your driving style, then you would get a lot better with anything else. The best I have ever gotten in a tank in my diesel was 19...

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

I worked for various truck and engine manufacturers over the years including Cummins, and you hit the nail on the head. While these engine are great in the duty cycle of a half ton truck, and possibly the duty cycle of an HD truck owner who never tows above 8k lbs, they have to make these...

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

The Chevy 292 and Ford 300 did not have a turbo tied to it and did not put out high power numbers. I guess we would have to disagree on the Ecoboost being a POS. We have a fleet of over 1500 truck nationwide at work and roughly 300 of them are Ecoboost F150's. We used to send these trucks to...

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

Sorry, but no. High reving DOHC engine are not that great in trucks that are meant to tow. They are great in cars meant to go fast. Push rod engine are way better at achieving low end torque that a trucks duty cycle requires.

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

I don't think it is doable towing the weights an HD will tow and it's duty cycle. The temps would get up there when towing 10k with my F150 3.5L Ecoboost and that truck was only 5k lbs and not the 7k lbs of an HD. Add in another 15k lbs an HD is rated to tow and you will have a hard time...

I am not trying to get in a diesel versus gas debate. I just wanted to be sure that the numbers were correct because I feel that people need an honest answer to help them make better decisions for themselves. A lot of times people exaggerate numbers to make whatever their peddling look good. I...

6.4 getting a make over or going away?

I don't think they will put a turbocharged 3.0L inline 6 in an HD truck. While it might be fine unloaded and have plenty of power even when towing, it would be hard to control the heat those turbos would put out at full boost/load for long periods of time when towing. I can see them possibly...
