On my 2007 ram 1500 Quad cab,I have the 20 inch chrome five spoke wheels. My buddy told me they are basically just hubcaps over a steel five spoke wheel is that true?
Pretty much yes. The OEM Chrome 20's are Chrome Clad which is the stock 5 spoke steel rim underneath a non removable chrome "Hubcap".
Manufacturers use them because, they are much easier to make than Chromed aluminum wheels, and on the end user stand point require less maintenance and will generally last longer with less care.
The 2006 20" wheels I had were plastic clad aluminum rims. Heavy ******** but still aluminum not steel. Maybe the newer ones are steel, but I doubt it.
Those are my exact wheels. The reason i'm asking,is I want to buy new tires but there is a few blemishes on my current wheels. So I THOUGHT and was hoping to buy new chrome plastic "hub caps" so my wheels would be like new. The reason of my concern is 35x12.5x20 tires are like $1500 and then the same size but in 17" are $100 less. I thought 20's were way more then 17's. So I figured since its only $100 more total for all 4 tires in 20's I might as well get new hub caps since I actually like these wheels. If and since now that I will switch to 17's i'm looking at forking out $2400 one time for wheels and tires, and there on after only saving $100 a tire purchase. If i'm buying new wheels I wont buy stock ones unless they are dirt cheap and flawless.
There was a pic floating around of one of the clad wheels without the cladding. They are glued on to the alloy wheel. I didn't like the look. I haven't seen any replacement covers.
