Front differential seals

I have a 1996 2500 4WD Diesel and need to replace one stub shaft and universal. My electronic service manual is unclear about the location of the seals. My question is, does the whole differential unit need to be removed to replace the seal? (is the seal on the inside of the axel or can it be replaced from the wheel side, is what I a need to know.)

Depends on if it's passenger or driverside. Driverside whole carrier comes out. Passenger it doesn't
