The lean burn Unit is broke off of the air cleaner and laying up on the fender well. There is no way to mount it back on air cleaner. I read articles about lean burn, and thought I would be better off changing to hei dist.
Thank you so much for your help!

I'd sure not want to change to an HEI distributor . That old motor I believe still in 1983 should be as simple as it gets.
CARB
POINT & CONDENSER LAST 20k .
& A GOOD PAPER Air filter .. Not a K&N. NO NO NO on them.
fuel fire & clean air your good to go. That how I SEE IT.

Wow electronic, so you have a magnetic pick-up W/ reluctor wheel that has an end gap you can adjust W brass feeler gauge.
Also on the points dist. there was a plastic drive gear, with the electronic not sure?

Lean burn is a very misunderstood ignition system!!! I was designed to make emissions regulations, Great idea but quite a few problems regardless of what engine it was on! all electrical connection were effected by corrosion, poor connection poor function! It basically had three timing modes; base (static), start up, and count up) all controlled by the computer attached to the air cleaner. That was put there to keep the electronics cool (outside air don't ya know).they had a specific carb. that just JETTED VERY LEAN (air fuel ratios will above 14.7 to 1) hence the name LEAN BURN. It would pull the fumes from the charcoal canister and use them also. The "count up timing was the main computer activated timing. the computer could add on so vehicle an additional 80 degrees at a steady speed. It had to start that "flame front" that early so by the time the piston got to TDC it (the flame started by firing the spark plug) it would be able to burn all the fuel ( remember they made it LEAN ) to make the engine have some power but burn "clean". Most dealers (their techs were not trained properly as that cost money to send them to schools) simple took if off. Hooked up the charcoal system with a vent valve/ purge valve system. Put in a dist. electronic or with points (electronic better for obvious reasons) that had a vacuum advance and a NON lean burn carb. That engine is bullet proof. They make all kinds of intakes ( 1 bbl, 2 bbl, 4 bbl, TWO 1 bbl's) intakes can even come in short ram or long ram style, headers, duel exhaust, cams etc. NHRA has a separate drag class for them with very high modifications. They can make in excess of 500 HP and live. the 225 even came from the factory aluminum block and heads. 170 cu in, 198 cu in and 225 cu in I would toss it all. Do some research as what kind of power you want to make, Make sure it is a 225 (by pass hose is about 3 inch long) Get a dist. with vacuum advance, Cam it if ya want, I would put at least a 2 bbl carb on it ( twi 1bbl's look better but a 2 bbl. easier to set up. and a nice exhaust. I'm an "old Fart" and have a bunch of stuff Books etc. on lean burn but not worth it in the real world.

Also, your charcoal canister is completely disconnected, that's what burns the fuel tank vapors and uses engine vacuum to achieve it, do you have a pick&pull locally you can get a air cleaner assy to mount that lean burn assy on.
Charcoal canister burns nothing. I prevents fumes from entering the atmosphere.
Part of the car's emissions controls, this charcoal-filled canister's job is to absorb fuel vapor that would otherwise vent out to the atmosphere, causing pollution. Vapors trapped by the charcoal are released back into the engine through the purge valve and then burned.

Lean Burn versions generated a lot of complaints about hesitation, especially in cooler climates or on cooler days.

If it were mine, I'd convert to pre-Lean Burn configuration either using a Carter BBS (preferred) or the Holley 1945 (single barrels), or a Carter BBD two-barrel, depending on which intake manifold you have. You will need a distributor with a vacuum advance solenoid.

Non-Lean Burn versions were pretty straight forward and you could eliminate some potential electrical issues at the same time, especially the problem of failed Lean Burn computers. Slant sixes were pretty tolerant of timing, and whatever distributor you get will determine the basic timing. Older engines could have basic set at 10 degrees BTDC, but in the emission years it was often set at TDC. You can adjust the amount of vacuum advance at the diaphragm by using an allen wrench.

Slant sixes, are in my opinion, the toughest engine I've even seen. They will take abuse no other engine can, and keep on going.

Thanks all of you guys so much. Mean22 I'm from Summerville Thanks for explaining lean burn. I quess my question is how is truck running with out the vacuum lines. And the lean burn unit is still hooked up? You can see the leanburg unit broke off of the air cleaner and then they laid it over to the side. There has not been a lean burn conversion.I cleaned plugs, running rich, adjusted carb, the trunk runs pretty good, but how with no vacuum lines.Lol

i THOUGHT THE NO POINTS STARTED IN 1985. But doesn't matter if it doesn't have them then it some HEI system. i SOMETIMES go to old time used book stores & fine old Manuales ..
