Maybe its just me but I have a '96 1500 with 20s and have ran 275/60 and 295/50 tires, so around 32.3-33 inches tall. My trans normally stays in over drive when it engages, but I normally drive 50 mph to 60 mph. What speed are you all driving at or rpm when overdrive can not make up its mind?

Its because he has wider tires and torque management. Torque management castrates them, locks torque convertor up and makes you pin it to go anywhere. You have a 96 so you dont have torque management.

Comment was for the second gen guys, like dodge dude. Just curious as to why some people have issues with the 46RE staying in over drive, possible speed or rpm is my guess but I am just wondering

I realize that. Its because of computer control in the new ones is a different way of saying it. Touch the gas has to come out of overdrive to accelerate quickly, just very slow accelerating in overdrive.

A couple reasons, hills, cruise control, and torque management.
The 96 does not have NEAR the amount of torque management that the 97+ trucks have.
Always has since I've owned it. Shoot, dad's 02 1500 with the 4.7 does the same thing. It's just Dodge transmission tuning after 1997.
