I have a 2018 Laramie 1500 CCSB with 35,960 miles on it. Apologies if there's a thread on this already. This morning when I started my truck at -5 deg F indicated, my speedometer needle stayed at "0 mph" and made a "ticking" sound while it pulsed. I took a short video clip (in my driveway) going 4 or 5 mph with the digital readout working and the speedometer needle stuck at "0".

I am 40 miles away from the end of my 36K bumper-to-bumper warranty - my dealer is further away than that. This is my third Minnesota winter with this truck, and I have never had this issue before. As the truck warmed up (interior only - temp outside got colder), the speedo finally started working again and agreed with the digital readout.

Anyone else had this issue - in or out of warranty ? If so, what was your fix ? If it is a just a clean-out-the-instrument-cluster-and-lubricate fix, then I can handle it myself. If the cluster is going bad, I will call the dealer and see what they can do for me. From general principals with complicated electronics, I would rather not do a cluster replacement unless it's really necessary, since often one fix produces another problem.

Thanks !

I don't have any experience with this issue though I'd like to add two thoughts.

  • I've no doubt the speedometer is electronic so there wouldn't be anything to disassemble and lube. Given that warming up fixed it, one possibility is a loose/cracked solder joint. I think finding and repairing it could be tough with the size of electronic components these days.
  • Regarding the warranty, I'd expect the dealer to honor the warranty since the problem started before the warranty ran out and you're not hundreds or thousands of miles past 36k when you arrive at the dealer. If you want to hedge your bets you could call the dealer and mention the mileage and issue before you take it in, a time/date stamped video would further reinforce your position.
Another though would be to look into a an extended warranty, I paid $1800 for 6 years /125k miles on my 2018 ecodiesel for a Mopar Max Care warranty. If the dealer decides the instrument cluster needs replacing I'm sure they'll charge more than $1,800.

Good luck, I'm interested to see what the outcome is.
