So I've been dealing with this for a hella long time now. So what I did was get a replacement steering shaft (from the steering wheel to the rack). Pulled the existing steering shaft and did a side by side comparison. No difference. What I did note is the connecting bolt on the U joint...
Sounds like it could be two issues to me. One regarding the play...(The shaft has a rubber bushing that can wear out allowing for some slop or play) and the other may be electrical power steering issue.
Had this issue with our 2016 Limited.

I totally agree. What I don't know is if there's a solenoid in the system that fails or is the pump internal to the rack and pinion and how could debre find its way into it?
