Hi, guys

For the purposes of my security job that I have to drive around the parking lot 40 hours a week. My question is: Is gasoline or diesel better when it comes to idling?

Thank you for all the inputs.

Diesel, no contest.
Extensive idling on gasoline motor is more harmful than for a diesel engine.
Diesel engine, idling really does not have an more of a negative effect, on the engine, than normal driving.
Whereas on a gasoline engine, there will be more carbon buildup.

Only problem with the diesel is the emission systems might give you trouble, may have to take it out on the highway every once in awhile to regen.

With all the idling hours police vehicles do, and they are all gasoline, I would say gas at this point. Diesel maybe in the past but thanks to modern day emissions no way.

Do yalls think should I get a used pickup for my particular job since I have to idling a lot? I'm planning to get a new 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel... but based on what yalls saying I personally don't think the new truck would last for a long time with the idling plus it gonna be wasted. I intension is to keep the pickup truck as long as I can.

I agree with Arth. If you were to pick up an older 2500 with a (pre-DEF) Cummins, you would probably be fine letting it idle 24/7, but a new truck with all the emission crap they have on them now, would probably soot up and cause you issues.

Historically, diesel, but the new EPA emissions have made that impossible now.

Diesel will be less prone to fuel getting into the oil but as long as you change your oil more frequently gas should be fine. Like others said the emissions systems on diesels are not going to be happy if you aren't going on longer drives every week.
