US Navy - served from 1981 to 1987, was stationed on the USS Virginia CGN-38 as a nuclear reactor operator. All the nuke cruisers have long since been decom'd and now there is a new (relatively) USS Virgina class of submarine - Sic Semper Tyranis!

USAFA, eh? I got to work security at a couple of football games there, Utah and Army, while I was with the 310 SFS at the Base Formerly Known as Falcon. The morning of the Utah game, there was so much fog, we couldn't see the field from the press box during the pre-game security briefing. My 1st Sgt. counterpart with 10 SFS and I drove around all day taking hot coffee to the cold troops on their posts. Dang it if I didn't leave my Fisher DeBerry bobblehead doll they gave out at the game in the shirt's back seat.

My favorite WWII aircraft just because of Black Sheep Squadron. Did you have to repair bullet holes with tin cans like Red West in the show?

Yes, it is mine as well.

my favorite too but my dad was the back seat guy in an SDB flying off one of the short carriers, the Chennango in the Pacific during WW2. shot down twice but said those planes would take a beating and still get home. the Chennango was under 600' long so landings were similar to a crash he always said. Corsair over P-51 is a hard choice.

Over 30 years split between AD and Reserve/AF Technician. Retired in '22 as Force Support Squadron Superintendent, E8/GS-12.

USAF AD 1987 through 2000. USAF Reserve 2005 through 2022. Did everything from Contracting to Vehicle Ops, Training, and finally the supe job. Drawing retirement from both military and federal civil service, which pays for my toys and performance mods.

Canadian Army Reserve. 30 Years. 25 as a Wpns.Tech Land Small Arms. RCEME: Royal Canadian Electro Mechanical Engineers.
We pronounce it Re Me.

In French Génie Electrique et Mecanique Royal Canadien or GEM

Always liked to work rather than lead (Although as is the case for everyone I always knew when I was well led). It was easier to get employment if you were a Cpl. or a Master Cpl. so I eventually, reluctantly took my last promotion at age 58 and retired a Sgt at age 60 with a 21 year accumulated pension at 42%.

( Up to 2026 all Reservists in Canada are volunteers. There are sometimes more soldiers applying than there are positions on deployments.)

A 6 month UN deployment in Croatia in the former Yugoslavia in 1993.
A 6 month deployment with ISAF in Afghanistan at Kandahar Airfield at age 52 in 2007.

At that age you learn quickly it is a young person's game and I spent the bulk of my tour at the workbench, however many half my age did not make the tour most because they could not pass the physical fitness test. The standard for my age was lower but several who were far younger did not even make that level.

Always be ready.

Our Motto Arte Et Marte By Skill And By Fighting

Some info.....

The RCEME (Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) has two notable mascots:

  • Sadie – the Corps' official mascot. A statue rescued from rubble near Lanciano, Italy in 1943, kitted out with a helmet, rifle, and bayonet, and used to stand guard at the workshop control office.
  • Digger – a dog who served as the Maintenance Platoon mascot for 26 UN peacekeeping tours in the Golan Heights, was promoted to Warrant Officer in 2003, and is now the mascot of the RCEME Museum.
The RCEME regimental quick march is a medley of "Lillibulero" and "Auprès de ma blonde" (the same combination used by the British REME). The slow march is set to "The Flower of Scotland."

Hope you enjoy a little history.

PS: I still have the Kabul plate I "liberated" from a local vehicle in KAF. here's a pic.Truck1.jpg
