I have the dorman bushings in my truck. Pliers, the right size socket, and getting a good "snap" when installing are the keys I have found to longevity. Mine have been in for around 6 months so far.
I used a carb, distributer and ignition box from a 1973 tuck. The upgrade to a "super six" 2bbl carb is worth it if you can find a manifold reasonably. Either way might need to do some carb jetting. Rock auto or local auto parts store should be fine.
