For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

The only safe ones are the pulsar, or the banks pedal monster. The other controllers tap into the amps from the pedal circuit to power themselves and that has lead to check engine lights and unresponsive accelerator pedals. I would not touch the others with a 10 foot pole, all cheap junk made...

2025 Ram 1500 First Drive: No More Hemi

Odd, I tried finding it back but I think they updated the article and it no longer mentions the classic. It was either motortrend or caranddriver or one of the big ones. Sorry, don't know what to think anymore. But I remember posting the link to the article here on ramforum a number of weeks ago.

2025 Ram 1500 First Drive: No More Hemi

That was what I read a few weeks ago yes. Classic is still being sold this year with the 5.7. I could be wrong.

2025 Ram 1500 First Drive: No More Hemi

Yes, they still put the 5.7 in the classics, this is the last FCA product being sold with a 5.7 new from the factory. So either they're still building the 5.7 in very limited quantities or they're just going through a backlog and when its done its done but in any case that engine will stop being...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

So there is at least 3 psi to the lifter bores at all times, they specifically say "This lifter oil keeps the bores lubricated..." But as with all discussions on the hemi it seems, this article too doesn't get everything right: from experience, I can say that my engine doesn't care whether it...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

In that thread you mentioned getting excessively hot temps (260) and having to reduce towing speed, that may have been part of the problem in your case, that's one reason I run a 30 weight and keep temps down at all costs. Edit: Burla has posted a report from an engineer who looked at these...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

That looks pretty terrible. What was your oil choice (brand + viscosity) and change/interval when that happened?

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

Thinking about it more: if increasing idle to 750+ helps, then why does disabling MDS matter? Either it gets lubed enough at 750 rpms, or it doesn't. If disabling MDS is damaging the lifters at 1200 driving down the road then there is no point in increasing your idle rpms. Either the crank...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

That's just the problem with this theory. When you enable T/H, the theory says you're damaging your lifters because T/H will prevent MDS from engaging.

They don't accept canucks south of the border for that job, gotta be merican. But... I'll gladly help push the **** we have out of office for ya. (be right back, think my bank account just got frozen? )

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

I got an idea. Why don't you all donate a few hundred to the cause (ie: me) and I'll have someone tear down my engine and look at the lifters. Course while they're in there they may as well do some uh minor upgrades like a cam and MDS delete, but hey maybe we'll at least get some answers when it...

    Switched to Redline 5w30

You won't be able to feel a difference in power due to viscosity. The guys on bitog calculated it out and IIRC it's like a fraction of 1 hp due to increased friction. I've run everything from 0w-30 to 5w-20 to 5w-30 and 0w-40 and never felt a bit of difference. The summer I ran Mobil 1 FS 0w-40...

    New 2023 Classic 5.7 lifter/engine noise?

That sounds like every other hemi on stock oil to me. As recommended already, you can try a premium oil and see if that helps, my engine certainly sounds much better now then it did on dealer oil. Here is my engine, ignore the faint and random exhaust pipe contraction "click"s at the end...

How many quarts does your large dual filter system take? Just curious.

    Oil Filter Thread

Fram XG2 is about the same physical size as the RP 20-820. If you can fit that RP you can fit the XG2. I did manage to run both of those in my truck but it was tricky getting them in/out. Now I have a filter relocation kit and can screw on a paint pail if needed lol. If you look online most...

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

When MDS is enabled and active (so 4 cylinders running only), while in that mode all 16 lifters apparently are getting fed extra oil as the MDS uses oil pressure to collapse the lifters. When MDS is not running (or disabled), then those galleys are closed. So MDS active is also feeding the non...

My 5.7 knows that if it throws a lifter its getting kicked out and replaced with a 6.4 so no doubt that's helping me out here.

    Oil Filter Thread

I normally run Fram XG2. Can't be bothered to track down RP these days (harder to find north of the border) and the Fram actually has higher filtering ability anyway.

For the guys who think deactivating the mds via a tune is a good idea

I'm firmly in the "this is not as true as it sounds" camp as I've reached 60,000 miles with MDS disabled for about 59,000 miles. If MDS was that important for proper lifter lubrication then my truck must just love me or something as I don't see how it would last that long without proper lube...

    Synthetic Oil

It's not musk that's the problem though. He should be free to waste whatever money he wants on whatever ridiculous project he wants and people should be free to invest (ie: "lose") money in his fun toys and people should be free to buy them. But it's reaching the point where we're no longer...

    Blackstone - used oil analysis

I always do it because I like nerdy details like that. But really it's only useful if you are planning to establish an oil change interval and you want to know how far you can push it. If you're like most of us and change it every 5000 to 7000 miles then its not needed.

    Avoiding the hemi tick?

Like Wild One suggested, I don't think piston slap is a terribly destructive thing despite what it sounds like. GM's are known for this and they seem to run a long time despite it. If I did a lot of short trips I'd be more concerned, but I have < 100 idle hours and already at 60,000 miles so by...

    Avoiding the hemi tick?

That's what makes these noises so fun, everyone has different results. I really wished thinner oils worked for me, they don't which is why I've tried so many different variations. I solved my noisy valve train with the first batch of Redline I used, every oil change after (6 or 7 since then) has...

    Avoiding the hemi tick?

Pretty sure I've saved a few bitog comments on my disk talking about this, I will try and look them up again, more than likely they came from a member named "ZeeOSix". Here is quick google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Abobistheoilguy.com+"ZeeOSix"+positive+displacement+oil+pump

    Avoiding the hemi tick?

Picture a steam roller driving over a ketchup bottle with the cap open; that stuff is coming out whether it wants to or not. Now replace the contents with thick mollasses, same steam roller and bottle, the PSI at the bottle cap will increase but it's still going to come out at the same speed.
