I'm leaning towards getting a new 1500 to flat tow behind my motorhome and tow my 21' toyhauler.
I would get the quad cab, s/b, 4x4 with Hemi.
What are the advantages of the 8 sp? My understanding is that it gets about 2 mpg better mileage. Is there any advantage while towing and is it worth the extra money to upgrade to the 8sp?
Thanks

When you are towing you will be in tow/haul. So, you'll never be in 8th gear. When not towing the 8th gear will help with mileage which is always a good thing.

8spd hands down. Everything I see about the 645RE points to it being a time bomb. The 8hp70 is rated for far more torque and built by ZF, who know a thing or two about building good drivetrain components.

I don't think you can even get the 6sp in a 2014 1500.

The 8 speed is an awesome transmission. I own two Vehicles with the Hemi and 8 speed and they are a great combo. Definitely get the 3.92s if you'll be towing. The 6 speed is not a bad transmission, but keep in mind it was first introduced in 1999 as a 4 speed. There have been minor updates (including a programming change that created a 5th gear), but it's virtually the same transmission that's been used for over 15 years. It's not even a 6 speed, that's just some bad marketing...

I agree with the consensus here. I would opt for the 8 sp.
In general, I've been under-impressed with every Chrysler transmission I've ever owned / driven. The 8 sp is NOT built / designed by Chrysler.

love the 8 speed + 3.92. bit weird using 4wd low tho since it wants to shift pretty much the second you touch the gas
