I am thinking of trading my 06 1500 for a Mega Cab Cummins. The truck is a 2010 with 105,000 miles. What are some of the things that I need to look at when buying a diesel truck? Are there certain years to stay away from? What are the big expenses of a diesel engine and what mileage do these expenses start to happen? I generally only put 10k miles a year on my vehicles. Any feedback is appreciated.

Have the emissions system fully inspected, check for stored codes. A lot of the pre-DEF trucks had a lot of emission issues, so many were deleted so that they would run. If you live in an inspection state, make sure it is not a deleted truck.

And if you dont live in an emissions area delete it lol. Also check blowby and make sure the tranny is solid

As stated, pre-DEF 6.7s had emissions issues, and fuel dilution of engine oil issues. At the time, Cummins was bragging about meeting the 2010 standard in 2007, but they really screwed the pooch.

Agree, fuel dilution is a big issue
To be honest, I would stay from pre def trucks. If you can get by with a gasser, you might be better off. The days easy to maintain, increases fuel mileage, simplicity of the 5.9 Cummins are over.

I had a 2006 Megacab, before the problems introduced in 2007. Biggest issue then seemed to be the few where a leaky injector washed oil off the cylinder wall. Lots of potential $$$ there.

It was a manual transmission, seemed to be able to pull a house off its foundation idling in 1st. It did take an entire Walmart parking lot to turn around, one had to plan exit strategies. I used to put all the furniture for one bedrooms apartments in it as I moved daughters around.

Make sure you really want a diesel, or need one. For typical everyday low mileage use the gasser may be better for you.

Rear pinion seal, make sure tranny dosent slip, and check the aforementioned emmissions stuff IF it isn’t deleted. I will say pre DEF trucks were much easier to delete and back then, WAY cheaperTo do so. I had a‘10.........she was deleted and ran like a beast, should have NEVER traded that gem.

EDIT: bonus IMHO, those trucks came standard with 3:73’s with 4.10’s as an option, 3.42’s were optional too IIRC. Point being, you can get better gears from the factory in those years.
